Thoughtful Gifts to Give This Valentine's Day

Unless you have had your head under a rock for the last few weeks, you are very much aware that Valentine?s Day is fast approaching. ?I see tons of adds for expensive diamond rings or huge bouquets of flowers but where are the ads for the thoughtful gifts? ?The romantic little gifts that have special meaning for only you and your partner? ?I love to get thoughtful gifts for Valentine?s Day that remind me of a special time in my husband and I?s life together. ?As the years go by, things get more and more hectic in our lives and every once in a while I want to be reminded of why we fell in love in the first place. If you are looking for thoughtful gifts for your own significant other this Valentine?s Day, ?here are a few suggestions. ?Remember, Valentines Day should be more about the romance than about the price tag!

Thoughtful Gifts for Valentine?s Day

1. ?Make it Memorable: ?While we sometimes thing that Valentine?s Day gifts need to be flashy, there are a lot of ideas that are simple to create that would make thoughtful gifts for your significant others. ?You could buy a pretty frame and put in the menu from your first restaurant date. ?Buy a digital photo frame and fill it with photos of your family together. ?Another thoughtful gift idea that I love is to make your own photo coasters. ?All you need is some tiles from Home Depot, pictures of your family, and a few craft supplies. ?It?s a great way to help you remember those special moments every single day.

2. ?Make it Tasty: ?My husband and I?s favorite way to celebrate Valentine?s Day is through food. ?Usually, this does NOT involve a fancy meal at an exotic?restaurant?that we have to wait 3 hours to get into. ?I do not have the patience for that at all! ?We either cook a meal together or sit down to enjoy a special treat together like fruit with chocolate fondue. ?Other foodie ideas that make thoughtful gifts for ?Valentine?s Day are special homemade spice rubs for the grilling enthusiast, a batch of homemade beef?jerky?for the camping or hiking enthusiast, or homemade candy for those with a serious sweet tooth. ?You can also bake some delicious cupcakes and wrap them in special cupcake sleeves like I found on the Personal Creations website. ?Cupcakes are all the rage nowadays and they can be quite a beautiful dessert after a homemade meal. ?I seriously wish I knew how people got their icing to look so pretty?I have tried and just can?t quite get it!

3. ?Make it Functional: ?While romance is nice on Valentine?s Day, I prefer gifts that will get used every day of the year. ?While a sexy red scrap of lace might be pretty, how much use is it really going to get? ?Okay, maybe I don?t really want to know that but there are gifts that can be romantic AND get used every single day! ?A coffee mug, for example, is a nice thoughtful gift if you put your own unique spin on it! ?Get a mug that is painted with your names and fill it with your significant other?s favorite treat. ?My husband LOVES chocolate covered coffee beans, which would be a delicious treat to fill a mug up with.

?

The most important thing to keep in mind this Valentine?s Day is that some of the most thoughtful gifts you could ever give a person cost very little! ?There is no reason for you to shell out a lot of money just because the TV ads tell you to buy diamonds and pearls! ?Another thing to remember is that even when you are buying small items, you can save money by shopping online with coupon codes for shops like Personal Creations. ?They have a great selection of products that would make thoughtful gifts this Valentine?s Day!

It?s all about the romance, NOT the price tag!

WriteRoom (for Mac)

Starting up a high-end word-processor like Office 365's?Microsoft Word and Apple's Pages is like stepping into a candy store. On display for you to enjoy are toolbars, ribbons, and dialogs offering dozens of tasty-looking formatting features that let you choose color-coordinated fonts for headings and text, set custom page margins and line spacing, create multiple columns, draw pictures, and other high-tech delights. In contrast, when you start up WriteRoom ($9.95, direct), the pioneering minimal word-processor for OS X, you get a window and nothing else. Pages and Word give you a lot more.

The whole point of WriteRoom is that it gives you less. If you're a writer who wants to get well-written text on the page, and you don't want to be distracted by options that have nothing to do with the actual words you're writing, then less is more. The fewer visible options there are on screen, the more you can concentrate on your writing. WriteRoom makes concentrating easier than any other app I've tried.

Unlickable
When WriteRoom first arrived a few years ago, it was a surprise success in the Mac market. All other Mac apps were designed so that (as Steve Jobs said about the buttons in OS X) they looked so good "you'll want to lick them." WriteRoom, in contrast, made the Mac screen look like the text-only green-screen monochrome monitor that your parents bought for their PC in 1987. Compared to the programs that ran in that old green PC screen, WriteRoom has its many clever options hidden away. By default the latest version looks more like a piece of typing paper than a green-screen monitor, but it's still the least distracting writing environment I've used on a modern computer.

In fact, I'm writing this review in WriteRoom, concentrating on typewriter-style text that appears on a plain gray full-screen background, and it's a calming, Zen-like experience unlike anything else on a modern computer. I tested WriteRoom on a Mac; a separate version, which I haven't tried, is available for iOS devices.

Writing in WriteRoom
By default, WriteRoom creates files either in a bare window with a gray background using a monospaced (typewriter-style) font. A keystroke lets you switch between windowed and full-screen mode. The windowed mode displays a current word-count in the title bar. Full-screen displays a word count unobtrusively in the lower-left corner, but (again by default) hides the count while you're typing to avoid distraction.

You can customize the word count feature so that it displays any combination of line count, word count, character count, and the amount of time you've spent working on a document?or you can hide all these things. Other options let you turn on live spell-checking, grammar-correcting, and autocorrect. An option that's useful if you need to keep track of the time you spent on any writing job is one that keeps a spreadsheet that records the editing time of each writing session.

You can change the whole appearance of the screen by switching among what WriteRoom calls Themes. Some of these are supplied with the app, others downloadable from the vendor's site. Available themes include versions of the old green-screen (my favorite) and some silly themes that make the screen look like an ancient Commodore 128 or a piece of old linen. You can modify a theme merely by choosing a different screen font or by opening a customization menu. If you're willing to find or create the needed sound files, you can even assign sounds that will play when you type a letter, delete something, or press Enter.

By default, WriteRoom creates plain text files?no italics, no bold, no headlines, just words, saved in the standard .TXT format that any text-based application can open. If you want to apply bold, or italic, or any other formatting, you can open the .TXT file in another word processor, or you can use WriteRoom's option to convert your file to Rich-Text Format (RTF), which is readable by all word processors. In its RTF mode, WriteRoom can create tables and bulleted or numbered lists.

One minor annoyance is that if you want to convert an existing document from plain text to RTF format, WriteRoom creates a completely new, untitled RTF file containing the text of your original .TXT file and you have to save the new RTF file with a new name. I would have preferred this feature to work like Apple's TextEdit, which replaces the TXT file with an RTF file so you don't end up with two more separate documents as you do with WriteRoom (and, to be fair, with all other word-processing apps).

WriteRoom relies on the built-in powers of OS X to handle document formats. You can use WriteRoom to open Microsoft Word and other standard document files. An imported Word file will preserve basic formatting, and WriteRoom will edit it in RTF mode. Features like tables and lists are preserved, but not multiple columns. When I want to concentrate on the content of a Microsoft Word file, I sometimes open in it WriteRoom to get the job done.

Worth Trying
With its barebones feature set, WriteRoom isn't for everyone, but it's an app that's worth trying by every writer?and everyone in school or business whose writing would improve in a low-distraction environment. WriteRoom deserves its name: it provides room for writing that you can't find anywhere else.

Siemens reboots Mideast unified communications push | IT strategy ...

Unified communications (UC) is an evolving IT solution, designed to make company communications more efficient and flexible, cutting costs and safely accommodating the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend - fast establishing itself as a new business norm.

UC consolidates various forms of communication and access devices, such as tablets and VoIP phones, and runs everything on one physical network, liberating staff from being deskbound and ensuring the right person can be reached at the right time.

Since voice traffic is digital, phone calls are made on the network and thus do not incur line charges - one number will also ring simultaneously on multiple phones.

Applications are then also simplified. For example, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems can become integrated within a UC environment. Customer information is now with you on the go. Calls and messages follow the user wherever they go and there is no need for the 'caller' to establish where their contact is, or what number to call.

Siemens Enterprise execs adamant about Mideast growth

"I would put it strongly. I think we're pushing the restart button. It's a relaunch. We really want to have a stronger presence in the Middle East - that's why we're here," he said.

Extoling the benefits of UC, Aghili boils it down to one simple fact; 'it's open'. "There was no Siemens telephone in my hotel room today, but I used a web client so my office called a number in the hotel room and I basically paid nothing for the call," he explained. "The server was in Munich and the call went out to Russia."

A mix of around 100 customers, distributors and resellers were invited to get a hands on look at the solutions, according to Siemens Enterprise's Marc Aghili, Senior VP for Business Development, also responsible for indirect channel sales.

"This event is part of our new marketing strategy, which includes 'seeing is believing' sessions. Technology in action tells more than a thousand words - it's a proof of concept type of approach," said Oliver Obitayo, Vice President of Marketing for Siemens Enterprise EMEA/APAC.

"Strategically speaking the Middle East, which is part of our Asia Pacific (APAC) region, is very important," Obitayo told AMEinfo. "It's a tremendously dynamic region with a lot of opportunities for products like ours. We see a lot of potential here and at Siemens Enterprise we're putting our focus on growth opportunities," he continued, speaking about the firm's new push in the Middle East region.

Irrespective of how you define 'emerging market' there is certainly no shortage of new business in Mena, hence Siemens refocusing their efforts on securing more market share in the region. The company's 'amplifyTEAMS' initiative is aimed at shifting the focus to productivity, moving the discussion from just selling phones to starting a discussion about how to transform a business through better communications.

"In the past, or even today, we have all the cost-cutting initiatives such as IP phones and reduced roaming charges. But we need to turn the story around and ask what we need to do in order to make a team perform better," said Obitayo.

"The purpose is at the end of the day to drive team performance, which could be 5 people or a whole company, to make sure they work more effectively. At the end of the day that translates to more productivity for the company, and hence competitive advantages," he explained.

French battle Mali Islamists as Tuareg problem looms

KIDAL, Mali (Reuters) - French and Malian troops are fighting Islamist rebels in the Sahara outside northern Mali's biggest town, France's defense minister said on Wednesday, describing the desert campaign against al Qaeda as a "real war" that was far from won.

After driving the Islamists from northern Mali's main towns with three weeks of air strikes and a lightning ground advance, France is now pursuing them in the remote northeast, where pro-autonomy Tuaregs are pressing their own territorial claims.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said French and Malian joint patrols were searching the scrubland outside the desert trading towns of Timbuktu and Gao. Gao residents said on Tuesday the town had been hit by rebel rockets fired from the bush.

"There were clashes yesterday at Gao because from the moment where our forces, supported by the Malian forces, started undertaking missions and patrols around the towns we had taken, we encountered Jihadist groups that fought," Le Drian told Europe 1 radio. "It's a real war."

With just 4,000 ground troops in an area the size of Texas, France has appealed for the swift deployment of a U.N.-backed African military force (AFISMA) to help secure the region, and says it expects to start pulling its troops out from March.

The African deployment has been slowed by lack of transport and equipment, but Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters in Paris that France wanted the African force to be converted into a U.N. peacekeeping force by April.

WORKING WITH TUAREGS

"From the moment that security is assured, we can envisage without changing the structures that it can be placed under the framework of U.N. peacekeeping operations," he said.

France has said that several hundred Islamist fighters have been killed since it intervened In Mali on January 11 to turn back an Islamist column advancing south toward the capital.

With logistical support from Washington and European allies, it wants to restore stability and remove the threat of Islamists using Mali as a base to launch attacks in Africa and the West.

French troops are cooperating with Tuareg pro-autonomy MNLA rebels who say they have occupied the remote northeastern town of Kidal and surrounding areas after the Islamist fighters fled French air strikes into the nearby Adrar des Ifoghas mountains.

But that on-ground cooperation, and France's public insistence that the MNLA should take part in talks on Mali's political future if it drops a demand for full independence for the north, is an irritant for Mali's troubled military.

"The MNLA are playing PR ... they might go and occupy those places where there is nobody and pretend they are militarily present, but they don't represent anything for us," said a Malian military source who asked not to be named.

Mali's armed forces are still smarting from their defeat in last year's northern Tuareg rebellion, which triggered a coup in the capital Bamako and was later hijacked by Islamist jihadists. Many ordinary Malians deeply resent the MNLA for opening the door to the Islamists' seizure of the north.

Interim President Dioncounda Traore, installed by the military after last year's coup, has offered talks to the MNLA if they do not seek full independence, and says he is aiming to hold a national election by July 31.

TUAREGS NOT UNITED

Experts say the MNLA are poorly organized and divided and represent only a part of the north's population.

"There will never, ever be a solution if you don't talk to the Tuaregs - but they are not homogenous," said Jeremy Keenan, a British anthropologist and expert on the Tuaregs.

"You have a huge part of the rest of Mali not wanting to have anything to do with the Tuaregs - the Tuareg problem has to be resolved and it goes wider than Mali." There are also restive Tuareg communities in neighboring Algeria and Niger.

Paris argues that lasting peace in Mali hinges on political talks to reconcile the black African-dominated government in Bamako with the restive north, in particular the Tuaregs.

Positioning itself for talks, the MNLA said on Tuesday it had occupied the town of Menaka, more than 250 km (185 miles) south of its remote northern stronghold of Kidal.

The MNLA has started its own patrols in the remote regions around the Algerian border where Islamist fighters are believed to be holding seven French citizens hostage. It announced this week it had arrested two senior Islamists fleeing to Algeria.

French special forces and some 1,800 Chadian troops are also based in Kidal, but Malian government troops have kept away.

"AFISMA and also the Malian army will deploy eventually to Kidal," AFISMA spokesman Col. Yao Adjoumani told a news conference in Bamako. "Talks between the MNLA and the government will take place later."

Surface Pro team teases new accessories, explains battery life and storage

Surface Pro review lead

Now that the Surface Pro is a fait accompli, there's more than a few questions circulating from prospective buyers. The project's Panos Panay and his team have stepped up to answer them on Reddit, and they've shed some light on just about everything, including later plans. The Pro-specific connectors at the bottom? They're for "future peripherals" that may require more power than the pogo pins do. The short battery life and limited free storage were also purposeful (if difficult) choices, Microsoft says. The company wanted to maximize performance while keeping the tablet reasonably slim, so it couldn't rely on a big battery; it included the space-chewing recovery partition as it wanted to offer the "confidence" of a failsafe rather than leave customers to fend for themselves. While the answers won't appease everyone, they at least put the design decisions in context. Hit the source link to sate your curiosity in full, or at least as far as an Ask Me Anything session allows.

Questions remain over Russian dissident's suicide

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian opposition activist who committed suicide at a Dutch deportation center after his request for political asylum was turned down was laid to rest Wednesday, as fellow activists demanded answers from the Netherlands over the murky circumstances of his death.

Alexander Dolmatov, a 36-year-old rocket engineer who feared arrest in Russia after an opposition protest turned violent in May, was taken to the prison-like deportation center in Rotterdam on the night of Jan. 16. The next morning he was found dead in his cell.

Dutch authorities are investigating and have not released an official cause of death, but his background in missiles and an enigmatic suicide note have fueled speculation about the case.

Fellow activists from The Other Russia, a punkish and anti-globalist opposition party with a cultish devotion to their leader, novelist Eduard Limonov, and other critics are pointing to Dutch immigration officials as the ones at fault and saying Dolmatov never should have been in detention.

A few dozen, dark-jacketed members came to pay their respects at the Moscow wake, where Limonov said he would "demand an investigation into what happened, because there are a lot of absolutely improbable circumstances coming up."

Dolmatov fled to the Netherlands believing he would quickly earn refugee status given concern in the West over a Kremlin crackdown on the opposition, his friends have been quoted as saying. Already, one participant in the May protest, which took place on the eve of President Vladimir Putin's inauguration for a third term, has been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison and about a dozen others are awaiting trial.

Dolmatov reported coming under pressure from Russia's security service, whose agents he claimed had threatened to get him fired from his job at a military plant. Immediately after he left for the Netherlands, the apartment where he lived with his mother was searched by police.

But Russian prosecutors did not file charges against him, and Dutch authorities denied his asylum request on Dec. 14.

Conspiracy theories about his death have spread across the Russian blogosphere. Opposition activists and bloggers have claimed his work designing missiles attracted the attention of Dutch security services, even though Dolmatov had the lowest possible clearance. Dolmatov himself had accused the Russian security services of trying to recruit him in 2008 and 2011.

Confusion deepened when Russian media published his suicide note. In a hastily scribbled letter to his mother, Dolmatov wrote that he was killing himself "so as not to return as a traitor, having shamed everyone" because he had "betrayed an honest person, betrayed the security of our Motherland."

Questions loom over the last few weeks of his life. His mother said she had increasing trouble reaching him on the phone and at one point he went missing for five days.

"He was in a strange state of drowsiness," his mother, Lyudmila Doronina, said Wednesday. "I once got through to him, he said, 'I'm sleeping, I want to sleep,' and it had never been like that. I understood something had gone wrong, and then it was all over."

His lawyer, Marq Wijngaarden, had filed an appeal on Jan. 11, which would have allowed him to remain in the Netherlands for at least a few more months. But it is unclear whether Dolmatov was aware of it.

Saskia Bolt from the Dutch Council of Refugees said the main issue was why the Russian asylum seeker was in detention if his case was still running.

More than half of Russian applications for asylum are rejected in the Netherlands, according to government data. In 2011, the last year for which the figures are available, 494 Russians sought asylum.

Netanyahu Prefers the Chareidim Over Lapid

(Sunday, February 3rd, 2013)

The daily Yisrael Hayom newspaper reports on Sunday, 23 Shevat 5773 that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu prefers a coalition that includes the chareidi parties over Yesh Atid. The report explains that if compelled to select between Yair Lapid or Shas and Yahadut Hatorah, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu prefers the chareidim for the prime minister does not want the stability of his coalition resting on the shoulders of Lapid. In essence, from the perspective of numbers, it is almost equal as Lapid has 19 seats while Shas and Yahadut Hatorah have a combined 18 seats.

Ideally the prime minister would like a broad-based coalition that included all of them but if Yesh Atid remains adamant regarding the share the burden issue, it will have to be one or the other, Lapid?s party or the chareidim.

The chareidim last week signaled a willingness to accept the modified share the burden plan that was announced by Likud?s Minister Moshe Ya?alon, rejecting the Lapid share the burden plan as a non-starter.

Lil Wayne has yet to watch Nicki Minaj on 'Idol'

METARIE, La. (AP) ? "American Idol" picked Nicki Minaj as a judge to draw in viewers, but she's actually discouraged at least one person from watching it ? her mentor, Lil Wayne.

The rap star admitted Friday that he has yet to see "Idol" this season ? or any other season.

"Actually, I've never watched it," he said, a bit sheepishly.

Part of the reason he hasn't tuned in to see Minaj is because she didn't exactly sell the show to Lil Wayne.

"When I talk to her she's always tells me, 'You don't wanna watch that, you're not going to be into it,'" he said.

"She knows me. ... It's kind of like a catfight where they be going back and forth type of thing, I'm not into all that," he said of the judging panel, which includes Mariah Carey, with whom Minaj had a much-publicized argument.

"The talent on that is pretty good I heard, though," he said.

Lil Wayne spoke Friday after signing autographs for more than 100 fans who were at a suburban New Orleans Macy's to support his Trukfit clothing line; a couple hundred more waited outside for a glimpse of the star.

Wayne said he's hoping to soon make Trukfit for women and children. Now, it's just a men's line. Part of the problem is finding the right designer.

"They send everything, every design to me, and I approve or decline, and the designer is extremely OK (with that). ... That person may have designed something, and I may say I hate it. I get no flack about it, and women are different," he said, laughing. "So we're trying to find the perfect female designer who has no problem with me declining what I don't like."

Lil Wayne, of course, still has his day job: His new album, "I Am Not A Human Being II," is due out March 26. When asked what fans could expect, he said, laughing: "Never have expectations for me, like never, because I probably will not meet your expectations. ... Just enjoy what you get, hopefully."

Is this Super Bowl ad kiss too steamy for TV?

By Ben Popken, TODAY contributor

GoDaddy's reputation, and infamy, has been built in large part due to its lewd, mammary-filled Super Bowl ads. This year's, while still trading in the "sex sells" mentality, is a little different. But not so different as to fail to meet the expectations everyone has for a GoDaddy Super Bowl ad.

Featuring model Bar?Refaeli in a drawn-out smooch with a tech geek, one of GoDaddy's two 2013 Super Bowl ads once again cashes in on sex appeal. Compared to its earlier efforts, though, this one is classy, even sweet.

The commercial also stars race car driver Danica Patrick, who regularly appears in commercials for GoDaddy. The ad opens with a statement from Danica:

"There are two sides to GoDaddy. There's the sexy side represented by Bar Refaeli. ?And the smart side that creates a killer website for your small business, represented by Walter. Together, they're perfect.?

Cue the kiss.

At the end you're not left hating (but remembering) GoDaddy. Instead, you're rooting for the nerdly, curly-haired, bespectacled "Walter," played by Hollywood extra Jesse Heiman, who gets to do the lingering intense kiss with the blonde Refaeli.

"I told Jesse that he's a very good kisser," said Refaeli on the TODAY show, appearing via satellite from Tel Aviv.

"I actually had this very strange dream that all my friends know about. I always wanted to go to a club... look around, choose the one guy it's most unlikely that I'll ever kiss ... and kiss him in front of everyone, so he will be happy and he'll remember it for the rest of the week," said Refaeli, who?was voted #1 on Maxim magazine's Hot 100 list of 2012.?"GoDaddy made my dream come true."

The scene apparently took 65 takes.

"We tried to get it as perfect as possible," said Heiman, who smiled and shook his head when asked if he purposely messed it up in order to keep the kisses coming.

Bar?Refaeli, a 2009 Sports Illustrated cover model and the former flame of Leonardo DiCaprio,?does reveal a hint of cleavage in her taut, pink cocktail dress. However, there's no wardrobe malfunctions or down-the-shirt shots. Make no mistake, the centerpiece of the ad is an act of sexuality, a long kiss, but it's less "Girls Gone Wild" and more in the awkward rom-com vein you might see in a Judd Apatow-produced film.

Has GoDaddy grown up?

Somewhat. They're still up to their old teasing tricks. GoDaddy said CBS rejected a version of the ad that showed Refaeli and Heiman's tongues wrapped around each other's in an extended close-up, footage which the company shared with our producers.?A "non-Frenching" version will air during the Big Game.?But Heiman was quick to remind viewers of the TODAY show during his appearance this morning that they can go online to see more than what will be allowed during the Super Bowl.

GoDaddy's previous ads have had Danica Patrick slowly unzipping her jacket and then appearing to cut away right as she was about to show her breasts. Those ads told watchers to go online to GoDaddy.com to "see more."

The first time GoDaddy's ad appeared in the Super Bowl, visits to their website surged 400 percent, and orders shot up 100 percent, according to data by comScore.

"I would be very much fine with the second one airing and not the tamer one," Refaeli said. "When we do something?like that filled with a lot of humor, and we are joking about ourselves, I'd rather we go all the way." For those viewers who agree, GoDaddy will have something waiting for them on their website after the ad airs on the game, along with their ready and waiting online cash registers.

Do you think Bar Refaeli?s GoDaddy Super Bowl ad is too racy?

In Vietnam, rage growing over loss of land rights

KIM SON, Vietnam (AP) ? Faced with a group of farmers refusing to give up their land for a housing project, the Communist Party officials negotiating the deal devised a solution: They went to a bank, opened accounts in the names of the holdouts and deposited what they decided was fair compensation. Then they took the land.

The farmers, angry at the sum and now forced to compete for jobs in a stuttering economy, blocked the main road connecting the capital to the north of the country for hours in December. In a macabre gesture, some clambered into coffins. Police who came to break up the demonstration were pelted with rocks. Several people were arrested.

"This is an injustice," said Nguyen Duc Hung, a rice farmer forced to give up 2,000 square meters (215,000 square feet) of land he had worked for more than 15 years. "The compensation money will help us to survive for several years, but after that, how can we make our living?"

Forced confiscations of land are a major and growing source of public anger against Vietnam's authoritarian one-party government. They often go hand-in-hand with corruption; local Communist Party elites have a monopoly on land deals, and many are alleged to have used it to make themselves rich.

These issues unite rural and urban Vietnamese in a way that discontent over political oppression tends not to.

Land disputes break out elsewhere in Asia, notably next door in China, but they have particular resonance in Vietnam, where wars and revolutions were fought in the name of the peasant class to secure collective ownership of the land.

The farmers who blocked the road quoted the country's revolutionary leader, Ho Chi Minh, in the banners they posted at their camp. "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom," said one. "We would rather die than lose our land," said another.

The government recognizes that the anger coursing through the countryside threatens its legitimacy, and has pledged to revise land laws this year to make them more equitable.

But establishing clear property rights and enforcing laws to protect them comes with ideological complications in a country still publicly committed to state ownership of the land even as it embraces free-market capitalism.

Vietnam abandoned Soviet-style collective farming in the 1980s and began its embrace of capitalism. In 1993, it passed a revised land law that gave citizens the right to use land for 20 years, but stopped short of allowing private ownership. Local Communist party officials can forcibly acquire land, not just for public interest projects such as bridges and roads but also on behalf of private investors building housing estates and industrial and recreational facilities.

Complaints about corruption when rezoning agricultural land to accommodate expensive industrial plots are widespread. So are allegations that the government pays farmers one-tenth the market value of their land, or less.

"Compensation rates are very low and those who take the land profit greatly," said economist and former adviser to the prime minister Pham Chi Lan. "The land laws have many loopholes which have created fertile ground for those who, with the support of local governments, take the land from people for their personal benefit."

Small groups of farmers, many of them women, routinely demonstrate in Hanoi outside government buildings about forced confiscation of land. They welcome people taking photos of them or trying to talk, but security forces immediately shoo visitors away from the scene.

Disputes have been commonplace for years, but are increasing in frequency as farmers become more aware of their rights and economic development increases demand for industrial land. Many 20-year leases granted in 1993 are expiring this year, bringing fresh opportunities for rezoning of the land ? and more opportunity for conflict.

Government figures reported to parliament in November showed public complaints had risen to 4,200 in 2011, more than twice the total number of complaints received from 2005 to 2009. National assembly deputy Ho Thi Thuy acknowledged that corruption among local party officials was a problem.

"Some people have abused the state policies to profit illegally," she said, according to state-run media reports at the time.

The government has sought the assistance of the World Bank in revising the land law to reduce conflict. The World Bank and other outside institutions have called on the government to allow forced evictions only for works that benefit the public, not commercial projects, and to make the process more transparent and equitable.

Communist Party officials in Quang Ninh province, some 90 kilometers (56 miles) east of Hanoi, allowed an Associated Press team to visit Kim Son village. The journalists were escorted by party officials in the village. They spoke to opponents in phone interviews

Officials insisted they had followed the rules when acquiring the land for the housing project, which they said is aimed at upgrading the small village to a township.

"We are working together to build a more prosperous Kim Son," said Vu Van Hoc, chairman of the local people's committee.

He said the project used land that had been owned by 852 families, and that less than 10 percent of them disagreed with the government's compensation rate of around $6 per square meter. He said just seven families were continuing to refuse the deal.

Villagers now allege the land has been resold for $310 per square meter. Hoc denied that, saying the land had yet to be sold.

He said he hoped that by depositing the money into bank accounts in the villagers' names, "the issue could be resolved." He dismissed the protest in late December as the work of "village extremists who had managed to persuade others" to join.

Video of the protest was recorded by people on their cellphones and posted on the Internet by dissident groups, which seek to capitalize on the public anger generated by the conflicts.

For two minutes, police cowered behind riot shields as young men hurled rocks and bits of concrete at them, but officers eventually regained control.

State media reported that 12 people were arrested. The police chief refused to identify them, or to say whether they were still in detention weeks later.

The local communist party bused in five villagers who had no complaints about the compensation package to speak to the visiting reporters and briefly showed them the land, on which a local company is already constructing roads and drainage. Unlike those protesting the compensation, the villagers appeared to have significant holdings elsewhere, or younger families with jobs.

Mac Thi Thuc, a 50-year-old who attended the protest, and whose family is among the seven holdouts, said authorities cut off irrigation to her land in 2010, making it impossible to farm. She said the investors in housing scheme should have negotiated with her directly, not the government.

"Over the past two months, my husband and I have had no work," she said. "We have been trying to look for jobs, but no one hired us because we are old. We have no money and we are going hungry and we don't know how we can survive in the months ahead."

There is one potential source of funds: the money local officials deposited as compensation. Thuc says her family isn't touching it.

Stalingrad get names back on days marking battle

MOSCOW (AP) ? The southern Russian city where the Red Army decisively turned back Nazi forces in a key World War II battle will once again be known as Stalingrad, at least on the days commemorating the victory, the regional legislature declared Thursday.

The city was renamed Volgograd in 1961 as part of the Soviet Union's rejection of dictator Joseph Stalin's personality cult. But the name Stalingrad is inseparable with the historic battle, which was among the bloodiest in history with combined losses of nearly 2 million people.

Regional lawmakers' decision to use the historic name in city statements on Feb. 2, the day of the Nazi defeat, as well as several other war-related dates each year, has angered many in Russia where Stalin's name and legacy continues to cause fiery disputes nearly 60 years after his death.

Russia's human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin sharply criticized the move, saying it should be declared void by court.

"This is an insult of the memory of those who died," he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Nikolai Levichev, a senior federal lawmaker with the leftist Just Russia party, condemned the restoration of the old city name, saying "it's blasphemous to rename the great Russian city after a bloody tyrant who killed millions of his fellow citizens." Levichev added that the country won the war "despite rather than thanks to" Stalin's leadership, whose errors multiplied the Soviet losses.

Stalin led the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. Communists and other hardliners credit him with leading the country to victory in World War II and making it a nuclear superpower, while others condemn his brutal purges that killed millions of people.

President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, has avoided open public praise or criticism of Stalin, but he has restored Soviet-era symbols and tried to soften public perceptions of the dictator. Kremlin critics have seen attempts to whitewash Stalin's image as part of Putin's rollback on democracy.

In recent years, many in Russia were outraged by government-sponsored school textbooks that painted Stalin in a largely positive light and the reconstruction of a Moscow subway station that restored old Soviet national anthem lyrics praising Stalin as part of its interior decoration.

In addition to the Volgograd legislature's move to restore the old name of the city, authorities in Volgograd, St. Petersburg and the Siberian city of Chita ordered images of Stalin to be put on city buses on Feb. 2 to commemorate the historic battle.

Yan Raczynski of Memorial, a leading Russia's human rights group, was quoted as saying by Interfax that the authorities' moves highlighted the nation's failure to "legally and politically recognize the crimes committed by the Bolshevik regime, particularly Stalin and his inner circle."

In turn, communists said the decision to restore the name of Stalingrad for just a few days each year is just a half-step. Communist lawmakers met with World War II veterans and sent a letter to Putin urging the government to fully rename the city, the party said in a statement.

On Saturday, Russia plans extensive ceremonies to mark the 70th anniversary of the battle, which raged for half a year in 1942-43 with the Red Army resisting the Nazi onslaught in fierce street fighting and then encircling and capturing more than 100,000 Nazi soldiers.

Kragga Kamma crime - Police need to step in

THE article on the elderly woman, who was found murdered in her Bendor Drive cottage in Beverley Grove, has saddened and angered me ("Women's murders rock Bay, January 28).

Approximately five months ago my family and I moved from Bendor Drive, Beverley Grove, to another suburb, in order to find quietness and safety, as we were fully exposed to the elements from the informal squatter camp and the bottle store in Kragga Kamma Road.

The result of this combination often resulted in intolerable drunken behaviour, that led to these elements littering, urinating and defecating in public. Walking through Beverley Grove made one feel unsafe.

My wife and I love walking and often we were stopped and money asked of us.

On many occasions, I called the Kabega Park police station to report incidents and waited to see the outcome. In the majority of instances, the police did not arrive at the scene. At times I followed up with additional telephone calls, to be told that the police were on their way ? but still they did not arrive.

The last incident resulted in me actually visiting the police station to see what was recorded in the call log and, there to my astonishment, I found that my complaint based on the time of my call, was only recorded when I made the third call.

Furthermore, the bottle store sells liquor to these people, thereby fuelling the situation. The liquor is often consumed on the common off Kragga Kamma Road or just over the railway tracks toward Kamma Park.

To add to the calamity, the taxis use this area as a transit point, with music blaring, hooters going and "jumping" the robots at the corner of Kragga Kamma Road and Verdun Road.

It is easy to ask: "where is the neighbourhood watch?". Due to poor support, it collapsed, yet one must ask the question: "where are the police?"

Why should the neighbourhood watch do what the police should be doing, and after you have done your own job during the day? One feels helpless in the lawless society we live in, which is common in South Africa. The question is, what can be done to improve the protection of the innocent, law-abiding citizens of this country, or is it each one for himself?

I wish that a trustworthy official would send a response to this letter in the Herald, indicating what will be done to improve things ... someone who we can believe in and who will make things happen.
