UK Quad Poster for Woody Allen?s To Rome With Love

Woody Allen?s To Rome With Love, his return to the big screen following his Oscar-winning Midnight in Paris, was released in the US last month and has been doing very well over the past few weeks.

We first thought that the film might be coming straight to DVD here in the UK, since a release date was still unannounced as late as a month ago. But Sony will now officially be releasing the film on our shores in two months? time, and have released the UK quad poster (essentially a landscape version of the American one-sheet).

?To Rome with Love is a story about a number of people inItaly, some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors, and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into.?

Allen is directing from his own script, and has assembled a fantastic cast to star alongside him, including Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Pen?lope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, and Ellen Page.

To Rome With Love is set to be released here in the UK on 14th September, so if you?re a fan of Allen?s work, and have been looking forward to seeing this on the big screen as well, be sure to make a mental note now. And in case you missed it or would like a refresher, you can catch the latest trailer here. It looks pretty wonderful. As usual with this new poster, you can click to enlarge.

Scams, bedbugs among top consumer headaches?

By Bob Sullivan

Bedbugs, penny auctions, gold buying-companies and solicitations for home improvement work disguised as ?free? energy audits are among the newest complaints that local and state consumer protection agencies dealt with during the past 12 months, according to a survey released Tuesday.

The fastest-growing complaints in the survey by advocacy groups the Consumer Federation of America and the North American Consumer Protection Investigators involved debt collection abuses, Do Not Call list violations, mortgage-related problems and home improvement scams.

The report?s top 10 complaints include familiar issues, such as auto sales and repair and credit/debt issues. But a set of real estate related complaints cracked the top 10 for the first time?covering issues with timeshare sales and resales, retirement and assisted living facilities and real estate fraud. The full top 10 list is below.?

Tenant bedbug problems and home repair firms using high energy bills to dupe consumers were among the fastest-growing complaint categories, giving consumer agencies around the country a new set of?issues to deal with.?

The agencies' report was generated by a survey of 38 state, county and city consumer protection agencies from 22 states from March 2011 through May 2012.

?State and local agencies are essential components of the consumer protection system in the United States,? said Susan Grant, director of consumer protection at CFA. ?Their services save consumers and businesses money, relieve the burden on courts, foster confidence in government, keep the public safe, and help ensure fairness in the marketplace.??

Click here to read the full report (.pdf)

The report also includes numerous cautionary tales.

In Georgia, the Governor?s Office of Consumer Protection told surveyors that more than 100 consumers complained that a penny auction company named Wavee charged their credit cards $179 for "bid credits" without their permission after they signed up. After an investigation, Wavee refunded more than $1 million to 16,000 consumers.? In another penny auction case, iTicketBid.com refunded $22,000 to Georgia consumers when it allegedly failed to deliver sporting events tickets and other merchandise.

In Virginia, the Fairfax County Department of Cable and Consumer Services said it fielded numerous consumer complaints that a debt collection agency was taking money from their bank accounts without their knowledge or consent.

"In one case, a consumer said that she had paid her dentist directly for the $40 she owed him, but in the meantime the collection agency that the dentist hired took the account information from her check and created a ?remotely authorized? check in her name to electronically debit $30 for late fees from her bank account," the report said.?

In Florida, the state's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said bogus "free energy audit" solicitation phone calls were among the fastest-growing Do Not Call violation complaints.? Callers often falsely claimed that because the audit was free, the call was not subject to the restrictions of the Do Not Call law.?

The Pinellas County (Fla.) Department of Justice and Consumer Services reported that consumers also received postcards or flyers promising free audits to help lower their utility bills.

"In one case, the consumer was told that his electric bill would be reduced by at least $130 a month and that he was eligible for a $360 rebate from the federal government if he agreed to have a special ?energy efficient radiant barrier? that was used by NASA installed in his home," the agency said. "He was pressured into opening a $5,800 line of credit for the work. The company started the job but never completed it."

The fastest-growing set of complaints to the California Department of Consumer Affairs involved bogus locksmiths and other firms that practice without proper licensing.? Locksmiths use the Internet to advertise low prices to consumers in crises, including being locked out of their homes. But after disassembling locks, they often sharply raise their quoted prices.? The department said it forced several such security companies to close, and made hundreds of others obtain proper licenses.

A new type of identity theft combining computer hacking and old-fashioned telephone tricks showed up among complaints reported to the New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection. A woman received an unsolicited call from a man who said he was a computer security professional and that her computer was infected with a virus.? He then tricked the woman into divulging her password and promised to fix her issue.

"The next day, however, she noticed an unauthorized charge on her credit card and realized that she had allowed an identity thief to gain access to the personal information stored on her computer," the agency reported. ?

Also in New York, the demise of Hollywood Video turned into a headache for many consumers. After the video rental store shut down and filed for bankruptcy, the New York consumer agency received many complaints from consumers who said that Universal Fidelity Corp. -- which is managing the bankruptcy -- was demanding payment for unreturned videos, even though they had returned the videos and owed nothing. The agency says it is resolving complaints through mediation.

?

Top 10 Complaints (with last year?s rank in parenthesis)

1. Auto (1): Misrepresentations in advertising or sales of new and used cars, lemons, faulty repairs, leasing and towing disputes.

2. Credit/Debt (2): Billing and fee disputes, mortgage modifications and mortgage-related fraud, credit repair, debt relief services, predatory lending, illegal or abusive debt collection tactics.

Study finds that most mobile gaming is done at home - Gaming Nexus

Pop Cap recently commissioned a study by?Information Solutions Group to see how often people play mobile games in their day to day lives.

The study, which included some 125 million gamers worldwide, found that mobile gaming is not necessarily played on the go but largely while at home. This seems quite contradictory, as the term mobile gaming infers playing games while on the go, but that seems to not be the case. This especially true with tablet gamers, as they play more games at home than any other group.?

The gaming landscape may be changing, but does that mean that console and PC gaming will go extinct? I don't find that very likely, but time will tell how the gaming demographics will change.

Mobile Games Survey: Half of U.S. and U.K. Mobile Gamers Choose Mobile Devices as Primary Home Gaming Platform

PopCap Commissioned Survey Sees Mobile Games Played Everywhere; Most Popular Places to Play are on the Couch and in Bed

SEATTLE, WA ? July 24, 2012 ? Half of U.S. and U.K. mobile gamers favor mobile devices as their primary home game platform, according to a new survey released today by PopCap Games, a division of EA and maker of some of the world?s most popular video games.? Part of an extensive research project that projects a 125 million mobile gamer population in the U.S. and U.K, the survey reveals that mobile gaming doesn?t necessarily mean ?gaming on the go,? with many mobile gamers stating that their favorite place to play mobile games is at home on the couch or while laying in bed.? The survey also uncovered many surprising, quirky and naughty mobile gamer habits.

Conducted by independent research firm Information Solutions Group, the survey analyzed the behavior and play habits of mobile gamers, defined as those who have played a mobile game in the past month.

?We already know that people play mobile games ?on the go,? but now we are seeing mobile gamers largely favor their mobile devices for home use.? said Dennis Ryan, VP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap. ?If you add the fact we are seeing a deluge of new gamers coming in through mobile, we believe mobile gaming is invading the last bastion of video game consoles and personal computers: the home.?

The full results of the survey can be found here:? http://www.infosolutionsgroup.com/2012_PopCap_Where_People_Play_Mobile_Games.pdf

Following are highlights from the findings:

Mobile is the new primary home gaming platform, especially for tablet owners

50% of the mobile gamers in the survey agreed that mobile gaming is their favored method of game play at home over traditional consoles, computers and handheld gaming devices. Tablet-only players preferred home play on mobile devices even more (57%).

Mobile gaming doesn?t have to mean ?on the go?

According to the new survey, the top five places to play mobile games are: at home on the couch (69% of U.S. and U.K. gamers surveyed), at home laying in bed (57%), as a passenger in a car or on a bus or train (63%), waiting for an appointment (55%) and while watching television (41%). Those who play mobile games exclusively on tablets confirmed that they play more at home on the couch (78% percent) and while watching TV (52%) than other mobile gamers. Those who stated that they play mobile games only on a smartphone were more likely to play in situations that required waiting, such as while at a restaurant, in line at a store, or at an appointment.

Naughty gamers are playing mobile games everywhere; surprising facts

Many reported playing mobile games in offbeat places: A combined total of 10% confessed to playing mobile games either in a church or other place of worship, or while driving a car and/or while watching a movie at a theater. Of those surveyed, 8% confirmed they had played mobile games while in class at school and 9% had played at a sporting event. 6% of those surveyed had played mobile games at work during a meeting or a conference call, and 4% had played while at the gym. Almost one out of 10 mobile gamers (9%) reported that they had been late or missed an appointment, class, ride or flight because they were caught up playing a mobile game.

These distracted or naughty gamers and those who play in unorthodox places tend to be male (60%), younger than 35 years old (69%) and play frequently (78% play daily). This group also spends more money on mobile games (75% of this group spent money on games in the past year vs. 51% of the overall mobile gamer population) and are more likely to play mobile games with friends (85% play weekly, vs. 52% among overall mobile players). They plan to spend an average of $49.63 in 2012 on mobile games, game currency or content vs. $29.04 overall.

Survey Methodology

This international research was conducted by Information Solutions Group (ISG; www.infosolutionsgroup.com) exclusively for PopCap Games. The results are based on 2,301 online surveys completed by members of the world?s largest online ePanel (Toluna) in the United States and United Kingdom between April 25 and May 1, 2012.? To qualify for the survey, individuals had to own and use a mobile phone. Among these mobile phone owners, 1,004 were identified as mobile gamers (those who played a game on their mobile phone in the past month). In addition, 712 of the mobile device owners were also identified as smartphone owners, while 361 were identified as tablet owners. In theory, in 19 cases out of 20, the results will differ by no more than 2.3 percentage points from what would have been obtained by seeking out and polling all U.S. and U.K. mobile phone owners age 18 and over. Smaller subgroups reflect larger margins of sampling error. Other sources of error, such as variations in the order of questions or the wording within the questionnaire, may also contribute to different results.

Congress pushes to finish Iran sanctions bill

(AP) ? House and Senate negotiators are wrapping up a bill to impose a new round of sanctions on Iran, targeting shipping lines and adding other punitive measures to derail Tehran's suspected push for nuclear weapons.

Lawmakers hoped to unveil a final bill late Monday, with a House vote as early as Wednesday.

The measure would reconcile a bill the House passed last December and one the Senate backed in May. But several lawmakers are concerned that the legislation doesn't go far enough. They are pushing for a bill that labels Iran's energy sector a "zone of proliferation concern" which would effectively ban all business.

A draft version of the bill says it's the sense of Congress that Iran's energy sector be treated as a "zone of proliferation concern."

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he visits on Sunday - and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.

Romney is visiting Israel as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.

The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments - and because he's not Obama.

"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."

In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Still, with polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.

Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials. Romney attended swimming events in London on Saturday morning ahead of his planned flight to Tel Aviv.

In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.

He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. The Romney campaign said the likely GOP nominee only had time in his schedule to meet with one Palestinian leader and that Fayyad has an existing relationship with Romney. The Abbas camp did not offer an explanation for why no meeting was planned.

Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.

Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.

"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."

Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."

"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."

Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.

Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.

Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.

Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.

Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."

Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

Surgeons banned from human research

Two University of California at Davis surgeons have been banned from doing human research after they injected bacteria into the head wounds of consenting terminally ill patients without university authorization, according to a letter sent from the school to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The university ordered Drs. J. Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph J. Schrot to immediately "cease and desist" doing the procedure last fall, according to the letter, dated Oct. 17, 2011, obtained by the Sacramento Bee.

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi has ordered a review into the actions of Muizelaar, who is chairman of the department of neurological surgery at U.C. Davis, and Schrot, an assistant professor.

The lack of approval before conducting human research could jeopardize the school's federal funding, said Rosamond Rhodes, director of bioethics education at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

"You are required to comply with federal rules if you are an institution accepting federal funding for research," she said. "Whether or not the project is funded by the federal government, it still has to comply with the rules."

A spokesperson for the FDA told ABCNews.com it "cannot confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation."

The surgeons said they were given consent by three terminal patients with glioblastomas, tumors that arise from the supportive tissue of the brain, to insert bacteria into their head wounds. The doctors believed the bacteria would create a postoperative infection that could help the patients live longer, according to documents included in the letter to the FDA.

The surgeons insisted they were conducting an innovative treatment, not research.

"There are people who blatantly break the rules that endanger all of their research programs. We certainly didn't blatantly trample any rules," Muizelaar told the Sacramento Bee.

Two of the patients contracted sepsis and died as a result of the procedure, according to the university.

Harris A. Lewin, vice chancellor for research, wrote that the experimental procedure, which had been conducted on three patients without university or FDA permission, "constituted serious and continuing noncompliance reportable to the FDA."

Muizelaar was ordered to hand off his clinical investigations, while Schrot was required to take the FDA's Clinical Investigator Training Course "to assure he possesses requisite knowledge to perform future studies, if and as permitted," the letter stated.

On Thursday, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine awarded the university $53 million for research into Huntington's disease, limb ischemia and osteoporosis.

Man stops alleged iPhone thief, makes a video

By Marc Santia, WNBC

David Gray / REUTERS

Brian Hester was taking a smoke break on Barclay Street when he witnessed a man steal an iPhone straight out of a woman's hands Thursday.

Hester, a real estate broker and avid photographer, wasn't going to just stand by and do nothing, so he gave chase.

"All I was thinking was, 'Catch this guy,'" Hester said Friday.

Joined by other New Yorkers, Hester and the band of strangers caught up to the alleged thief on Broadway. They held him on the ground and Hester began taking video with his camera.

As they waited for police, the alleged thief decided to make a run for it, but Hester wasn't about to let him get away. He chased the man a second time and tackled the alleged crook right in the middle of Broadway.

Police came and arrested the man and the band of good Samaritans returned the iPhone to its owner.

Throughout the ordeal Hester continued to shoot video with his camera. He hopes that the video he took will serve as a warning to potential thiefs.

"I wanted to put the video out there to show anybody else who's thinking of coming to New York and snatching somebody's iPhone that you're not going to get away with that," said Hester.

India ethnic unrest toll rises to 50

The death toll from ethnic unrest in India's northeast rose to 50 on Saturday while at least 400,000 languished in relief camps as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the conflict-hit area.

The national government has dispatched medical teams to Assam to tend to the victims of the fighting that erupted eight days ago between indigenous Bodo tribes and Muslim settlers over long-running land disputes.

The chief minister of far-flung Assam state, Tarun Gogoi, said the region was now calm after what he called "unprecedented" violence as the focus shifted to providing relief to the 400,000 people who fled their homes.

The death toll climbed to 50 as police reported in a statement that the bodies of five more people killed in the riots had been recovered.

Singh, who represents Assam in the Indian parliament's upper house, was slated to tour relief camps on Saturday accompanied by ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi.

The chief minister described the violence as the worst crisis his government has faced, with rival groups from both sides attacking villages, beating people to death with sticks and burning down homes.

People in the camps have said they were afraid of returning to their homes.

"We are living in fear and we can't even think about going back to our homes," Bimla Basumatary, one of the displaced, told India's NDTV television network.

Gogoi has blamed Singh's government for the escalation in violence, saying it failed to send troops immediately after the unrest erupted.

Now at least 3,000 extra soldiers and paramilitary personnel are patrolling the region.

The international rights group Human Rights Watch said tensions had been building for more than two months between the Bodo and Muslim communities, which have clashed in the past over access to land and resources.

The group urged authorities to rescind the "shoot-on-sight" orders and "promptly investigate and prosecute those responsible while addressing the underlying causes of the clashes".

In Response to Minister Daoudi: Free Education is a Fundamental ...

By Omar Bihmdine

Morocco World News

Sidi Ifni, Morocco,, July 26, 2012

It was not long ago when Lacen Daoudi, minister of higher education, issued a circular that stated that Ministry of Education officials are not allowed to pursue their master studies on the grounds that the priority must be given to students. The Minister went a step further when he stated earlier this week that higher education will no longer free.

From my point of view, I don?t find his declaration shocking, because the minister simply aims at focusing on quality when it comes to higher education. What I rather find horrendous is when this minister does not take into account the circumstances of aspiring students while he defends himself by resorting to the flimsy excuse which is quality.

?It is hard to interest those who have everything in those who have nothing, ? said Helen Keller, an American historical figure. Daoudi and his likes fall under this category. Daoudi has got everything: He has pursued his studies; he has attained the highest positions in the government; he has encouraged his family to continue their studies at all costs. How should we expect this person to be interested in the majority of poor students whose dream is to pursue their studies at university without ?obstacles? It is hard as Keller once put it.

Daoudi is so cunning, for whenever he is asked about the his declarations regarding the controversial measures being taken by his Ministry, he begins to prevaricate and comes up with flimsy excuses, such as the fact that circulars must not be interpreted word for word and that higher education is free for the poor students, while it must be paid by the rich students. Isn?t Daoudi yet aware that the majority of Moroccan university students are poor? Isn?t he aware that the majority of university students face financial problems to pay for Xeroxing, let along for their higher education?

If the decision to put an end? to free education is implemented , we will all face a serious chaos at colleges. The faculty administration will find it hard to distinguish the poor who are worthy of free-of-charge education from the rich who aren?t worthy of it. Students will resort to fake certificates that show their poverty. When that time comes, we will end up facing the same problem scholarship beneficiaries are currently facing, as many who deserve grants do not receive them and many who don?t deserve them receive them.

I am afraid this measure will further aggravate the educational system. It is not a matter of either paying or not paying; what is of great significance is interest in education. As long as students, rich or poor, are interested in education, the government must assume the responsibility of providing free-of-charge education. Otherwise, what is the use of the taxes Moroccans pay if they cannot afford to have access ?to one of the greatest pillars of our lives which is education.

It goes out without saying that the ministry of higher education has set out to follow this policy so as to prevent teachers too from continuing their higher studies. Here, even teachers find it hard to pay for higher education. Daoudi?s intentions weren?t innocent when he promised to provide free-of-charge education for the poor, simply because this is the first step he had in mind toward eliminating this kind of education at universities once and for all.

Now, we can be sure that as soon as this measure is implemented, there will exist more victims of education. Paying for one?s higher education is a great obstacle for everyone, rich or poor, and we must not forget that education must be free at all costs if we are really determined to move forward as a nation. In earnest, it appears that with the latest decision of putting an end to free education, Lahcen Daoudi is in danger of moving from the frying pan into the fire, given the fact that our education is already deplorable in all respects, and imposing payment on aspiring students and teachers alike will only make it worse.

Instead of making the academic lives of students easier, Doaudi is dashing the hopes of hundreds of thousands from lower income families, whose dream is to pursue their higher studies. I think that his latest decision has come as a reaction to the hot debates over preventing employees of the ministry of education from doing their master studies. Carrying out his first circular must have been one of his ulterior motives behind this latest preposterous decision.

Before it is too late and before this decision becomes irrevocable, it is now incumbent on all aspiring students and teachers to fight for their fundamental right to have free access to higher education. It is high time we took action, especially that we are already on the eve of a new academic year and that Benmssik University in Casablanca, has already implemented the first circular which prevents teachers from pursuing their higher education.

ROOM WITHOUT A VIEW

He can hear the spikes and serves, but however much he tries to take a peek, British Prime Minister David Cameron won't catch a glimpse of the beach volleyball contests due to be staged right next to his home at London's famous No. 10 Downing Street.

Ex-leader Tony Blair once joked it was a "masterstroke" to hold the competition at Horse Guards Parade, a storied square in the heart of central London, which sits right next to the British leader's residence.

But Cameron says Thursday that a temporary 15,000-seat arena built for the matches has completely obscured his view.

"There's no direct line of sight," says Cameron.

ROMNEY REMARKS

Is London prepared to pull off the Olympic Games smoothly? Is that what Mitt Romney's asking?

The Republican presidential candidate is causing a stir in Britain by raising the question. The former Massachusetts governor is visiting British political leaders Thursday while trying to show he has what it takes to represent America on the world stage.

But instead of highlighting ties with America's staunchest ally, Romney may have embarrassed the Brits instead. Romney said in an interview that it's unclear whether Britain can overcome the issues that have dogged its final preparations for the Games.

Leaving a meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron, Romney said he expects the games will be successful.

Cameron says Romney and others will "see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver."

COOL IT

Do Brits simply not believe in air conditioning? Or is it just never needed?

"Man, it's hot in here," said U.S. boxer Claressa "T-Rex" Shields at training near the Olympic village. It was a seasonable 80 F (26.5 Celsius) on the street, but far, far hotter inside the sweltering gymnasium.

Will it be this hot for boxing's main event? Shields, a 17-year-old from Flint, Michigan, was asked.

"I sure hope not," she smiled.

To celebrate the torch's arrival in London a concert is being held in Hyde Park on Thursday ? the same place where the plug was pulled on Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen a few weeks ago after they violated a curfew.

Rees Ianson, 32, was a torch bearer in the north of England and so was given the opportunity to get tickets.

"I jumped at the chance, I'm looking forward to it," says the sales manager from Lincolnshire who was nominated as a torch runner for his charity work.

He's not just down for the concert. Rees also has tickets for basketball and hockey. "I can't wait," he said on his way to the gig featuring the likes of Mark Ronson and Dizzie Rascal.

WHERE YOU FROM AGAIN?

Kazakhstan is trying to replace two of its male Olympic weightlifters at the 11th hour, possibly because of citizenship issues.

The two are Arli Chontei, in the 56-kilogram category, and Farkhad Kharki, in the 62-kilogram category.

International Weightlifting Federation spokeswoman Aniko Nemeth-Mora says Kazakhstan is citing medical reasons. However, Kazakh weightlifting official Mendikhan Tapsiruly tells AP that "this is most likely to do with the fact they were granted citizenship recently."

Both lifters are originally from China. Two other lifters in Kazakhstan's team were recruited from China, while one switched nationalities from Russia.

HANDS OFF!

Russia's Olympic committee is laying claim to over a dozen athletes born in once-Soviet Ukraine. And it's sparked an outcry in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital.

Some athletes are listed as born in the "Ukraine region" of Russia, while others are listed as coming from the Ukrainian cities of Lutsk and Lviv, which were described as Russian.

Similar mistakes were made for Georgia-born athletes.

Russia's Olympic Committee is now working to correct the data. But it's done little to appease widespread resentment as a result of centuries of Russian dominance which ended when Ukraine gained its independence in 1991.

The line to pick up event tickets at the City of Westminster College will-call is snaking through the campus Thursday with fans anxious to get their hands on the prized item. Perkowski says his ticket-buying odyssey began 18 months ago when he was working for the Army in Iraq. He went through the early bidding process and finally scored tickets to three of his 24 choices within the last few months.

Now in Afghanistan working with the U.S. Marine Corps, he says he was coming to the Games regardless of what tickets he landed.

"I don't take too many vacations, so I was doing this no matter what," he says. "We took that long flight, drove forever to come straight here but I don't care. It's all worth it."

BRANDED LONDON

London looks different.

You can't walk for more than five minutes through central London without seeing some sign of the Olympics. AP's Tom Withers reports in from the basketball venue:

Act as if you own the place. That mantra has always served me well, and with those words in mind, I strolled inside the Olympic basketball venue, which wasn't fully open on Wednesday.

As technicians busily dragged cables around the outside of the temporary 12,000-seat structure, where the preliminary rounds are being played, I coolly walked in and watched a few minutes of the Angola women's team practice.

The unique building, erected in just three months, is covered in a white stretch material that will be used for light projections during the games. Its architectural style is similar to the Water Cube swimming complex in Beijing.

Feeling a bit guilty after my self-guided mini tour, I confessed to one of the media leaders that I had already been inside. He didn't seem to mind. "Cheers," he said.

Phillips, whose daughter Zara is competing in Team GB's equestrian events, has faced criticism and calls for his resignation over his affair with Hough, who is also a member of the American team's coaching staff.

After the Olympics, he will leave his job. But he says it's not because of criticism in the United States.

He told Country Life magazine: "I don't read chatrooms and all that rubbish as it's mostly uninformed and unidentified opinion, which won't change my life.

He's clear about one thing: "I'm not out to win a popularity contest."

GRIDLOCK ? LESSON LEARNED

AP's Fergus Bell, a Londoner, reports in from the crowded streets of his city:

I took a taxi journey into central London. I usually take the train or Tube because I think they are faster when there are no known problems on the line. Today, with a couple of bags in tow, I had no choice.

It should have taken me 32 minutes, according to a quick online route search.

It didn't.

OK, I knew that figure was a bit optimistic. But I wasn't expecting the driver ? who knows the roads very well ? to get confused by all the new Olympic lanes, end up going a very different route from the one he was expecting. I ended up in the back seat acting as navigator with maps pulled up on my tablet checking which roads were clear.

The result: after 1 1/2 hours in the car and still the wrong side of central London I abandoned the driver to his fate. Bags and all, I jumped out at an underground station and took a delightfully smooth 12-minute journey to my destination and learned a lesson: Stick to what you know and trust your instincts.

GELDOF'S GRUMBLINGS

Not everyone in London is looking forward to the Olympics.

"Nope."

No sport he was excited about?

"The egg and spoon race."

But, Geldof conceded, the games have at least brought much-needed regeneration to a post-industrial swath of east London ? transformed from gritty to green by the 500-acre (200-hectare) Olympic Park.

A SPANISH OLYMPICS?

As the debt-ridden Spanish government hovers on the brink of needing a sovereign bailout, the country is continuing to pursue a bid for the 2020 Olympics. Spanish sports secretary Miguel Cardenal maintains that Madrid winning the Olympics after two failed bids would help the country's economic recovery.

"The Spanish state is calling for its citizens to tighten its belts to accept the need for a degree of sacrifice and the measures are certainly painful," Cardenal said in London. "But we would nevertheless pursue this project," he said, saying that "this is something that will boost our aspirations to have a sustainable economy."

Bidding again, Cardenal insists Madrid will only spend where "absolutely necessary," but pointed out that much of the infrastructure is already in place.

"All of us will have to be very careful indeed in the way we use public funds," Madrid mayor Ana Botella added.

Missing out on the London Games, which start on Friday, appears to have been good fortune for a Spanish government struggling to keep a handle on its debts. Now there's time for a recovery in the Spanish economy long before 2020.

Madrid is competing against Istanbul and Tokyo. The host of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games will be announced on Sept. 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

PFT: Seahawks taking a look at Braylon Edwards

Braylon+Edwards+Seattle+Seahawks+v+San+Francisco+1ToK_F4yFmElGetty Images

It?s been a while since we?ve heard anything about veteran wide receiver Braylon Edwards, but he?s back on the radar as camps open around the NFL.

Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com reports that the Seahawks will have Edwards in for a workout. Edwards was released by the 49ers near the end of the 2011 season after he caught just 15 passes in nine games before being sidelined by a knee injury. There were rumors of interest from the Bengals and Jets over the course of the offseason, but they never amounted to much.

Edwards had a productive season as a deep threat for the Jets in 2010 and there will likely be some team that gives him a shot at recapturing that glory if he proves he?s healthy enough to get back on the field. That?s a big if, of course, but, as the Texans working out Roy Williams shows, teams are looking for help at wideout.

The Seahawks opened a spot in their receiving corps when they released Mike Williams and LaCanfora?s report indicates that the team is also looking at other free agent wideouts. That would suggest that they aren?t thrilled with the current group ? Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Deon Butler, Ricardo Lockette, Kris Durham and Ben Obomanu ? although Edwards will likely have to prove he can be a major part of the offense since he offers no special teams value.
