Commitment In The New Year-Not Hard To Achieve Follow Simple ...

If one of your resolutions for the New Year was to find, or improve, a relationship that you can be committed to then it may be easier than you thought. Commitment in the new year, or anytime, isn?t that hard to achieve but you must follow some simple rules if you want to succeed.

Commitment in the new year will come down to one basic thing: are you really sure that you want to make a commitment with a certain person?

Obvious, I know. But do you have any idea how many people completely overlook this one simple rule? So many people think they want to be in a committed relationship but in many cases it isn?t even about them and what they want, it?s more about what they think they should do.

For example, when we get to a certain age we are under a lot of pressure to ?settle down?. The pressure can sometimes come from our parents, our friends and even society.

It?s easy to confuse that pressure with our own wants and needs. Many times people will lie to themselves and convince themselves that yes, they really do want to settle down when in reality they don?t want to but they feel guilty and feel like they are doing something wrong.

When you do something, pretty much anything, just because you think you should, even though you don?t really want to, you are just setting yourself up for failure.

Before you start going down the ?commitment? road, stop and take a deep breath and make sure it really is what you want to do.

While compromise is an important ingredient to any successful relationship, whether a romantic one or not, this isn?t something to compromise on.

If you really aren?t in a place where you want to be in a committed relationship but you go along with it because it is what your partner wants or you are feeling pressured to do it, you will fail.

A committed relationship can be challenging in the best of times and if it is something you don?t even really want, it will be that much harder to keep that promise and truly commit to the relationship.

Another thing to keep in mind is that too many people will tell you that ?a relationship takes work? or ?relationships are hard?. How many times have you heard that from someone?

Well, I think that is wrong. I have been in both good and bad relationships and I can tell you that when you are in a good relationship it really isn?t work at all. There is very little need for compromise since the two of you will see eye to eye on many issues.

When you do need to compromise it is a true compromise where both of you give a little. Not what some people call compromise which is when only one person is doing the giving and the other is doing most of the taking.

Make sure before you promise to take the relationship to the next level that you are truly in a relationship with the best possible person for you.

Increasing your commitment in the new year can help you and your partner find true happiness and deepen the bond between you. Just don?t go into it blindly or you may really regret it with time.

South Carolina AD Hyman jumping to Texas A&M

University of South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman has been picked as the next AD at Texas A&M, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Hyman is set to join the Aggies just as they make their move from the Big 12 to the SEC, a move that will be official Sunday. He will replace Bill Bryne, who retired last month.

He is under contract with South Carolina through 2015 after receiving a raise last summer of $75,000 per year. Last fall, Hyman was a leading candidate to become the AD at his alma mater, North Carolina, but removed his name from consideration early in the process.

?I am honored to be considered by my alma mater, North Carolina, but my work here has not been finished and I love being a Gamecock.?

Since taking the South Carolina job in 2005, Hyman has overseen the football program?s turn-around into national relevance, as well as two College World Series titles in 2010 and 2011.

Google Nexus 7 developed in just 4 months, sold essentially at cost price

Android Central

So, the Google Nexus 7 is the hot ticket right about now. And so it should be. Despite the substantial leaks and rumors leading up to yesterdays announcement -- including the accidental posting of that ?video, it still blew the doors off when Hugo Barra officially unveiled it duriong the day 1 keynote at Google I/O. A stock Google tablet, running the latest version of Android, sold cheaply, and directly from Google. It's almost too good to be true, but, how did the Nexus 7 come about? In short, pretty quickly.

Andy Rubin, and Asus Chairman, Jonney Shih, have been speaking to ?AllThingsD ?about the origins of the Nexus 7. Google provided Asus with the challenge -- build a high end tablet, that could sell at $200, and they had just 4 months to get it done.

Shih also sent members of his team to work at Mountain View, so as to put them closer to Google, and to have a 24 hour development cycle. While it seems as though Asus may just have pulled off mission impossible, Rubin has heaped the praise onto the Taiwanese OEM.

He said that I don’t think there would have been any other partner that could move that fast.,” and that “we went from zero to working product in four months.” Whichever way you look at it, 4 months to release a completely new product from scratch, running a completely new version of Android, is pretty darn impressive. Hats off, to Asus.

Rubin also acknowledges the lack of a content ecosystem, has played a big part in the, thus far, poor uptake of Android tablets. With the release of a $200 tablet, and the additional content announced for Google Play, Google have themselves a device that could compete on a level playing field with the Amazon Kindle Fire. And, a high-end device at that.

And then comes the money. In getting a high end device out at a rock bottom price, the Nexus 7 will be sold with next to no margins. Being sold through the Play Store, Google also absorbs all the marketing costs of the Nexus 7. One of the big questions on every ones lips now is, what will this do to the Android tablet market as a whole?

Blige talks turkey over chicken ad controversy

Chinafotopress / Getty Images Contributor

By Rolling Stone

Mary J. Blige is speaking out for the first time about the stir surrounding her controversial Burger King commercial that leaked in April.

Appearing on Hot 97's Angie Martinez show on Thursday, the R&B star talked about the fallout from the ad and asked for forgiveness from her fans. "I want to apologize to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture. I would never do anything like that purposefully. I thought I was doing something right. So forgive me."

Burger King pulls controversial Mary J. Blige ad

In the Burger King commerical, which leaked back in April, Blige sang about a fried chicken wrap to the tune of her song "Don't Mind." The ad was widely criticized for playing into African-American stereotypes, and the fast-food chain quickly pulled the commercial, citing music licensing issues. Soon after, the company issued a public mea culpa to Blige: "We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final. We know how important Mary J. is to her fans, and we are currently in the process of finalizing the commercial. We hope to have the final ad on the air soon."

On Thursday, Blige recalled seeing the leaked version of the ad for the first time. "Oh my God, my heart dropped down to my stomach," Blige told Martinez. "I got this sweat and I said, real calm, 'This too shall pass.' But it just kept getting worse and worse and worse ... I went online to listen to the remix I did with Fat Joe, and all I can see is 'Burger King' and 'chicken' and 'buffoonery.' It just broke my heart.

"I would never just bust out singing about chicken and chicken wings," added Blige. "It hurt my feelings and crushed me for two days."

Explaining why she's remained silent about the ad until now, Blige said, "There was too much going on for me to stick my head out there and say anything. So I just pulled back and watched everyone and everything."

100 greatest singers of all time: Mary J. Blige

Blige added that she was originally sold on the idea that she would "be shot in an iconic way" for the ad and that she'd seen it as "a great branding opportunity." She also said that while she understood the jokes about the spot looking back, the experience also showed her who her real friends were. "Busta Rhymes hit me and he was like, "Are you ok, sis? I see what you were trying to do,'" recalled Blige. "Fat Joe hit me; he was like, 'Yo, we don't care about that stupid chicken commercial or whatever. We love you, Mary, and we know what you were trying to do."'

Still, Blige said, "It was a mistake when you look at it at the end of the day, because people look at it as a mistake. But I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn't come out like that."

BlueStacks brings Android apps to OS X, wolves planning a rest with some lambs

BlueStacks is releasing the first public alpha of its Android App Player capable of running on OS X. The virtualization company's software is powered by its Layercake technology and includes a bundle of apps from its various partners. CEO Rosen Sharma hopes the move will encourage developers to build "retina-friendly" apps for Google's mobile OS that can then be sold to those on the other side of the technology divide. There's a sign-up sheet for developers itchy to get their hands on the goods on the company's website, but don't expect a response right away -- there's still a few more days of Google I/O to go first.

(AP) ? Natalia Guzman stepped hesitantly into the morgue looking for her only son. She was led to rows of refrigeration units, where after peering at more than a dozen corpses she finally found 17-year-old Jaime.

Trembling and in tears, she embraced relatives outside the building and said her son's body had been riddled with bullets. She blamed a drug-dealing gang in her slum for the killing and complained that police might have prevented it had they been patrolling her neighborhood.

The rising tide of violent crime that has engulfed Venezuela has become a top issue in the country's presidential campaign, with opposition candidate Henrique Capriles blaming President Hugo Chavez's government for failing to halt the bloodshed. Yet Guzman and many other Venezuelans appear to have lost faith in the ability of any government as well as the police to address the problem, no matter who wins the October vote.

"Crime is out of control, and I don't think any politician, neither Chavez, nor Capriles, is going to change that," Guzman said, speaking in a low voice that at times cracked when she cried.

The government says more than 14,000 people were killed in Venezuela last year, giving the country a murder rate of 50 per 100,000 people and making it one of the most violent countries in Latin America and the world. The murder rate has more than doubled since 1998, when Chavez was first elected.

At campaign rallies, Capriles has been promising to fix what he calls one of Chavez's most glaring failures, declaring: "We will have to choose between life or death."

Chavez has responded by banning gun sales, expanding a new national police force and launching an anti-crime plan with stepped-up policing and other programs in high-crime areas.

It's unclear how the political tug-of-war on crime may affect the race. But Chavez's opponents are hammering away on the issue, convinced that some voters will be swayed.

Capriles' campaign manager, Leopoldo Lopez, said as he presented the opposition's "Security for All" anti-crime plan that nearly 14 years after Chavez was first elected, the president's promises are too little, too late. "He's never made the issue of security a priority, until now when he tries to use it as a political banner," Lopez said.

Experts say violent crime has increased in the country due to easy, cheap access to guns, a culture of violence among young men in the slums, and severe shortages of police officers and prosecutors.

Criminologist Fermin Marmol Garcia said Venezuela's fundamental problem is that for more than a decade, "the institutions that weigh heavily on crime prevention and suppression were not strengthened."

In polls, Venezuelans consistently rate violent crime as their top concern. But many tend to blame long-standing institutional problems such as police forces viewed as corrupt and incapable, rather than pointing fingers at politicians.

"For Capriles, the challenge is putting the issue on the pedestal, linking it directly to Chavez, showing that he's responsible and creating hope that it's possible to solve the problem," said Luis Vicente Leon, a Caracas-based pollster and political analyst. He said Capriles, who has been trailing in the polls, hasn't yet been able to gain traction on the issue.

Guzman isn't committed to either presidential candidate, and so far Capriles' anti-crime message hasn't resonated with her.

She said her son's motorcycle was stolen when he was killed after a street party, and she suspects the gunmen who killed him are the same toughs who terrorize her neighborhood.

"The police are almost never around when there's a problem. They always arrive hours afterward and they never capture anybody," Guzman said. "It's the thugs, not the police, who control the neighborhoods."

The authorities say a majority of the country's killings involve young men, often battling in poor neighborhoods over turf or drug dealing, or in simple rivalries. Crime has also been expanding into places once seen as safe, such as movie theaters, shopping malls and parking garages where security guards stand watch.

Shooting victims are often brought to the Perez de Leon Hospital near Petare, Venezuela's largest slum, where Guzman's son was gunned down. At the hospital, janitors mop blood from the white tile floor while doctors scramble to save lives. The victims' friends and relatives anxiously wait outside the emergency ward.

Abductions for ransom have grown rapidly in the past decade, with kidnapping reported to police rising from 52 in 1998, when Chavez was first elected, to 618 in 2009. Security experts say the real number of kidnappings is much higher because most cases aren't reported to authorities.

Recently diplomats from Costa Rica, Mexico and Chile were kidnapped, and all were eventually freed after ordeals lasting from two hours to more than a day.

Among the middle and upper classes, growing numbers of Venezuelans have been trying to take their security into their own hands by enrolling in self-defense courses, hiring bodyguards or bulletproofing their vehicles.

"Business has multiplied," said Ernesto Carrera, director of the School of Personal Protection, which offers intensive self-defense courses. He said his clientele has grown by about 80 percent in the past five years.

Jose Berrios, a 34-year-old businessman, decided to enroll after surviving an armed robbery, and now spends three nights a week at the school learning self-defense techniques and struggling through exercise sessions that include tossing medicine balls, doing pull-ups and lifting weights.

In one training session, an instructor demonstrated how to avoid a carjacking by using a martial arts move to disarm an attacker.

Capriles has been trying to capitalize on Venezuelans' concerns by accusing Chavez of ignoring the issue for most of his presidency. He has promised to take a different approach and make crime-fighting a top priority, laying out a plan that includes putting more police on the streets, raising officers' salaries and bringing more sports and art programs to poor neighborhoods.

Chavez responded by launching his latest anti-crime program last week, dubbed the "Great Mission For Every Life Venezuela." It includes allocating more money to expand training programs for police, starting community programs for troubled youth, expanding a fledgling national police force and targeting law enforcement resources to high-crime areas.

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said the country now has about 92,000 police officers in a patchwork of state, local and national police force but acknowledged Venezuela would need about 20,000 more police officers to meet U.N. standards. This September, El Aissami said, about 9,500 new recruits are scheduled to join the Bolivarian National Police after they undergo training.

El Aissami said that the challenge of combatting violence goes beyond hiring more police and building more prisons. Part of the government's program, he said, focuses on giving young men in the slums alternatives through sports and community programs so that they no longer view "a pistol and a motorcycle" as status symbols.

El Aissami told reporters last week that crime "is the most serious problem, the one of greatest concern and the one of greatest attention for the government."

Sen. Hatch looking to avoid revolt within GOP

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Over the past two years, GOP primaries have ended the careers of several veteran Republican politicians who were backed by the party's establishment. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch is seeking to avoid the same fate in his first primary challenge since winning office in 1976.

Hatch's race is the premier event as several states hold primaries Tuesday. Among them is New York, where 82-year-old Rep. Charlie Rangel is running for a 22nd term, the first time he's faced voters since the House censured him 18 months ago for failing to pay all his taxes and for filing misleading financial disclosure statements.

Those issues, plus changed demographics in the Democrat's redrawn Harlem district, could pose a re-election challenge for Rangel, who has also faced some health problems. But Rangel told CNN on Tuesday: "I got a clean bill of health. I'm fired up and ready to go."

President Barack Obama declined to endorse Rangel in this election, having suggested in 2010 that the congressman might retire "with dignity." White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters Tuesday: "I don't think our position on that has changed."

A few months ago, Hatch was considered vulnerable ? like his former Republican colleague Robert Bennett, who was booted from the Senate two years ago at the Utah nominating convention, and like six-term Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, who lost in last month's Indiana GOP primary.

But Hatch, 78, is now viewed as the heavy favorite in Tuesday's matchup against former state Sen. Daniel Liljenquist. Hatch has enjoyed a huge resource advantage that let him unleash the most expensive and detailed campaign operation in Utah's history. Hatch raised about $10 million, and that has allowed the campaign to contact thousands of voters individually and to spread two messages on the airways: He has the backing of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and his seniority on the Senate Finance Committee would benefit the state.

Liljenquist, 37, is a relative newcomer to the Utah political scene. He enjoyed recognition for leading efforts to overhaul the pension system for the state's employees during his first term as a legislator. Instead of opting to rise through the state's political ranks, he chose to take on the state's best-known political figure.

Liljenquist has seized on voters' concerns about the growing national debt and has tried to make the case that Hatch has been a major contributor to that debt by voting continually to raise the federal debt ceiling, supporting a Medicare drug benefit and working with the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to establish the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Utah has a unique nominating system, and Hatch was widely viewed as most vulnerable when about 4,000 GOP stalwarts gathered at the state's nominating convention in April. Delegates at the convention tend to be more conservative than the GOP electorate. The Hatch campaign team spent months behind the scenes trying to generate a new crop of delegates to the convention, and that work paid off, with the large majority of this year's delegates being new to the process. In the end, Hatch won 59.2 percent of the delegates, just shy of the 60 percent he needed to avoid a runoff with Liljenquist.

The Hatch campaign includes many of the state's top political consultants and strategists. It also hired some of the tea party activists who had helped generate Sen. Mike Lee's win two years ago.

"It was an organizational effort beyond anything the state has seen before," Hatch campaign manager Dave Hansen said. "Fortunately, we had the resources to pay the costs on that organizational effort."

Much of the money fueling Hatch's campaign came from corporations and trade groups that frequently have business before the Senate Finance Committee, which Hatch probably would chair if the GOP can win the Senate in November. Hansen said Hatch is not beholden to any particular group other than the residents of Utah.

Liljenquist's camp said it has motivated supporters who are expected to head to the polls in a low-turnout election. Holly Richardson, a campaign spokeswoman, said that in recent years candidates such as Lee and Rep. Jason Chaffetz fared better than pre-election polls had said they would. She said the campaign was reaching out to voters who don't normally participate in primaries.

The winner of the GOP primary will be the huge favorite to win the general election in November against Democratic candidate Scott Howell.

In New York, Rangel was fending off four challengers including state Sen. Adriano Espaillat and former Clinton White House official Clyde Williams in a newly drawn Manhattan and Bronx district that is now majority Hispanic. Espaillat, a native of the Dominican Republic, has strong support from the district's large Dominican community, but Rangel is still widely popular in Harlem and has the support of labor unions and most of the state's Democratic lawmakers. Andrew Cuomo, New York's popular Democratic governor, endorsed Rangel last week.

Democrats also faced a potentially problematic upset in Brooklyn in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Ed Towns. Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries has been favored to win the race and has received the endorsement of most Democratic leaders but is facing strong competition from Charles Barron, a city councilman and former Black Panther known for making incendiary comments about Jews and gays. Barron last week received the endorsement of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

AP Interview: Wozniak, Dotcom slam US piracy case

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak says the U.S. piracy case against Kim Dotcom is "hokey" and a threat to Internet innovation.

Wozniak and Dotcom spoke out against the federal case in separate interviews with The Associated Press Wednesday. Dotcom, the flamboyant founder of file-sharing site Megaupload, is accused by federal authorities of facilitating Internet piracy on a massive scale. Charged with racketeering and money laundering, he's fighting U.S. attempts to extradite him from New Zealand.

Wozniak said he was visiting New Zealand last month to give a speech when he learned Dotcom couldn't come to see him because he was under house arrest. So Wozniak said he visited Dotcom and the two have kept in touch by email since.

"It's just kind of ridiculous what they did to his life," Wozniak said in a telephone interview. "An awful lot of Kiwis support him. The U.S. government is on thin ground."

Wozniak said plenty of people used Megaupload for legitimate purposes before federal authorities shut it down in January and filed criminal charges against seven of its officers, including Dotcom. In a dramatic raid the same month, New Zealand police swooped down in helicopters onto the grounds of Dotcom's mansion and cut their way into a safe room where they found him hiding. He was jailed for a month before a judge decided he could be monitored from his home.

Wozniak likened the Megaupload site to a highway and those who shared pirated movies and songs to speeding motorists.

"You don't just shut down the whole street because somebody is speeding," he said.

U.S. authorities allege in their indictment that Dotcom and Megaupload deliberately thwarted attempts to remove pirated material from the site by removing individual links but not the pirated content. Prosecutors claim the "mega conspiracy" netted Dotcom and others $175 million in illicit advertising revenue and download fees.

In an email interview, Dotcom said the charges are bogus.

"The more people learn about this case the more they realize that this type of copyright disagreement between Hollywood and new cloud storage technology is a political debate, not something that belongs in the criminal court and certainly not something to justify breaking down the door to my house," he said.

Dotcom said Megaupload had been applauded for its content removal policies. But he also acknowledged the site could host pirated files.

"What people uploaded and downloaded in their storage areas was up to them. One person's licensed music MP3 file is potentially another person's infringing file," he wrote.

Wozniak said he believes that people should pay for content. But he also believes in keeping the Internet open to encourage innovation. He said trying to shut down sites like Megaupload is futile.

"If you've got a huge steamroller coming, instead of trying to stop it, you should get out of the way," he said.

Wozniak, a founding member of the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation which has sought to return frozen Megaupload files to users, said authorities need to release some of Dotcom's frozen financial assets so he can pay his mounting legal fees.

Born Kim Schmitz in Germany, Dotcom, who changed his name in 2005, has been in trouble before. He was convicted in 1998 in Germany of computer fraud and dealing in stolen phone cards. In 2002, he was convicted of manipulating the stock price of an Internet startup. Both times, he was fined but managed to avoid jail time. He also portrayed himself at the time as a super hacker, although German hackers spoken to by the AP say he did little of what he claimed. He moved to New Zealand after gaining residency in 2010.

Asked if he might be being fooled by a clever conman, Wozniak said it "could very well be the case."

"If I hear details that have credibility, I could totally turn against him," Wozniak said. "But I'm not finding it anywhere from what I've heard so far."

Dotcom has portrayed himself as the victim in rare interviews and on his new Twitter account, where he's posted photos of his family. He's also been thumbing his nose at authorities and the case against him. One photo he posted shows him standing in a field, his arms outstretched, with the caption "Flight risk!!!!" Another photo shows a colleague scrubbing bills in a bowl of soapy water: "Money laundering."

The irreverence and anti-authoritarian streak has appealed to many New Zealanders. In the eight days since starting his Twitter account, Dotcom has amassed more than 40,000 followers, rivaling the 51,000 who follow New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key.

Ira Rothken, one of Dotcom's lawyers, said he is pleased with the way New Zealand authorities have relaxed Dotcom's bail rules pending an August extradition hearing by gradually removing the restrictions on his movements and freeing some of his assets so he can pay personal expenses.

Dotcom's lawyers are seeking to have the case against the company ? although not the individuals ? thrown out on the basis that Hong Kong-based Megaupload had no legal presence in the U.S. They're also seeking the release of millions of dollars to pay for the legal fees.

Dotcom said he's optimistic New Zealand will deny the U.S. extradition request and is hopeful the U.S. will eventually drop the criminal case. Then, he said, he'd be free to focus on launching some new products, including a music service he's named "megabox." For now, he's got a new crowd offering support.

"That's why I love the Internet," he tweeted last week. "From zero to 1000 followers in one day. Let's make history together."

Hundreds feared buried in mass landslides in Uganda

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

At least 18 people were killed and hundreds of people were feared buried after landslides hit villages in Uganda, according to reports.

The Daily Monitor newspaper reported that at least 11 villages in the mountainous Bududa area of eastern Uganda?had been hit and two, Namaaga and Bunakasala, had been completely engulfed.

Witness Rachael Namwono, 29, told the paper that at least 30 homes in Mabaya Village ? containing an estimated 300 people ? had been covered.

"At 2 p.m., the ground trembled, followed by heavy rumbling of soil and stones which covered our home," Namwono told the Monitor.

Two officials in Bunamulembwa Village said about 100 houses were destroyed and 150 people were unaccounted for, the paper added.

'Devastation'
It was not immediately possible to verify the report, but officials in Bududa told The Associated Press that they feared that hundreds of people had been killed.

The affected villages are in a coffee-growing area on the slopes of Mount Elgon straddling the Kenyan border.

Red Cross spokeswoman Catherine Ntabadde told Reuters that the latest reports had confirmed 18 people had died "but assessment of the devastation around the area is continuing."

A local member of parliament, David Wakikona -- who said he had initial reports of more than 100 people buried -- said there was an ongoing danger.

"The areas around Bududa district have been experiencing heavy rains for days now," he told Reuters. "I am told the landslides started around midday today [Monday] and that they're still going on and some villagers who survived the early slides are fleeing."

Landslides caused by heavy rains are frequent in eastern Uganda, where at least 23 people were killed last year after mounds of mud buried their homes. Scores of people were buried alive in a similar disaster in March 2010.

Stephen Mallinga, Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness, said an emergency response team had left for the area and hoped the situation would become clearer on Tuesday. "We're also mobilizing relief items like food, tents and water containers," he said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

(Dating) Double Standards ? Two to Tango? | Big Little Wolf's Daily ...

Years ago, before I was divorced, I used to raise an eyebrow over a close friend?s dating habits. She was a stunning and charismatic woman in her 30s with two young children, an ex she couldn?t stand, and a social life that seemed to give new meaning to ?don?t get mad ? get even.?

She was smart, sassy, confident, and beautiful. She was a Man Magnet, and fell in like, in lust, and in love a few times a year. Her household (to some degree) reflected the revolving door that characterized her social life.

What bothered me at the time was the way she inducted the Most Recent Great Man into her family sphere, and then he would be removed from the picture when she grew disenchanted. Another might take his place a month or two later, in yet one more relationship that was doomed to end.

I like to think I had no issue with her dating life per se. Who was I to comment on a single mom?s sex life? If anything, I was in awe ? even more so when a few years later I found myself divorced (in my forties), with two young children, and wondering what would come next.

Love, Sex, Relationships, and Judgment

Her whirlwind affairs? Was that the source of my disapproval?

Was it their number, their speedy shelf-life, or was it genuine concern for her kids and the fact that her short-lived amours weren?t conducted more privately?

Was it seeing her ultimately repeating unfortunate patterns, since she expressed a desire to remarry? Or was I jealous of what appeared to be a glamorous social life ? which resembled nothing in my real life ? ever?

This morning, an article on entering relationships that are unlikely to last popped up in my reader. First, I thought of my divorced friend from those years ago. Then I thought of another friend whose post-divorce dating life was also something of a dizzying series of escapades.

Sex and the Double Standard

Most of the divorced men I?ve known openly admit ? usually with a rakish grin ? to a significant number of partners. These liaisons are classified as fun, filler, ?temporarily serious? ? and occasionally longer term relationships. In my experience, guys generally have no issue with saying they were involved with four or (or more) women over the course of a year.

It doesn?t take new math to run the numbers: three, four, five years after divorce ? and the play time has been plentiful.

I also know men who have had one or two relationships a year, and that arithmetic yields a less lip-pursing response.

But what about the women? What if they fess up to four or six affairs a year? Do they state their dating norms with such candor or aplomb?

Not the women I know. They keep these mentions private. I might add that the women I know ? particularly as they get older ? are more interested in a relationship than a fling, in part because of aging bodies. (I can?t tell you how many times women friends have said they couldn?t imagine getting naked in front of a casual acquaintance; it?s tough enough to do so with someone you love.)

Leaving that last statement aside for the moment (a different matter), does the old dating double standard still exist when it comes to women? And what about the fact that it takes two to tango?

Falling in Love, in a Flash

The article on these relationships with no future describes two very different women with varying approaches to socializing, that nonetheless yield the same result: these women enter relationships that fizzle in a few months.

The first adores those sizzling sparks of early romance, her flame burns ardently but burns out quickly; the second woman is equally enamored of beginnings, but she expects every relationship to potentially lead to Happily Ever After. Less impetuous in her choices, she nonetheless repeats a pattern with the same outcome.

Are we to assume these women don?t know what they?re doing ? or are they moving through a necessary (and pleasurable) discovery process ? for them, as individuals?

When it comes to dating after divorce, I think of my friends. The first, whose beauty and verve enabled her to live life to the fullest while juggling work and kids, and a second friend from years before, whose story was seemingly different.

Also divorced, but after a Starter Marriage, she fell hard, fast, and often ? and was the classic example of a woman who was in love with love, confusing passion and romantic gestures for commitment. Incidentally, this is a pattern she eventually grew out of.

And Now, For Something (Not) Completely Different

Yesterday?s discussion of dating after divorce ? and taking care as to the effects on our children ? brought an interesting remark from Sassy Queenpin Mama.

She writes:

I love that you wrote about experiencing more than one relationship, because I am feeling a little guilty about that. I don?t have many single mama role models and sometimes I feel like to be a mother I should either be single or just choose one already.

You may or may not agree with my response to her experience ? (have fun, be safe) ? but I fully understand what she is feeling. It?s as though the world is looking on and saying ?choose one, already? ? not only because there is an expectation that we should all (want to) remarry, but a double standard still exists when it comes to women and their sexuality.

And I suspect I may have turned a bit of that same critical eye toward both my friends in the past. I?d like to think my concern was for their well-being, and also the well-being of the children involved.

But was it more than that? My own carryover of the dating double-standard?

Dana Jacobson, Ex-ESPN Anchor, Admits to Child Molestation

In the wake of the Jerry Sandusky verdict, former ESPN anchor Dana Jacobson has come out and admitted to her own personal nightmare: she was sexually abused as a child.

Jacobson, who left ESPN in April when her contract expired, said in a blog entry this week that she was inspired to speak out after learning from the Sandusky scandal that "the time for silence is over."

ESPN anchor

"It was inappropriate touching, fondling of genitalia," Jacobson wrote of her experience with a male babysitter many years ago. "It may not have been as frequent or severe as what I read about in the case of Sandusky's victims, but that doesn't make the abuse I suffered any less real or the shame I felt any less overwhelming."

Jacobson says there were two incidents in particular and she was unable to fully acknowledge them until she was well into her 20s.

"I've learned that each time I tell my story, I let go of some of the shame and guilt I've carried with me for years," she writes. "Those feelings so deeply buried at times they seem never ending. So truth be told, my sharing right now is really just a part of that long road to recovery I mentioned earlier, the one Jerry Sandusky's victims are just beginning.

"I'd like to thank them for helping me take this latest step, finding my voice. I hope by doing so, I can help others find theirs."

Facebook changed the email address on your profile, here's how to fix it

1 hr.

You may have heard (or read) that Facebook just changed your email address without even asking you?? and in a way it did?? but the whole thing's not quite as scary or dramatic as it might sound. And you can easily fix things with a few clicks.

Kashmir Hill of Forbes' Not-So Private Parts blog was among the first?to report on the change.?She labeled the whole thing as "Facebook's lame attempt to force its email service on you."

This all sounds scary! What happened?
You see, what happened is that the email address?? or in some cases, addresses?? displayed on your Facebook profile was changed?from whatever it was to your?Facebook email address. (Your Facebook email address consists of whatever is at the end of your Facebook URL slapped in front of @facebook.com. For example: My Facebook URL is http://facebook.com/rosa, so my Facebook email address is rosa@facebook.com.)

For most people, this is pretty darn annoying as all the mail they receive at the Facebook email address winds up in their regular Facebook inbox. Based on a quick survey of friends and colleagues, it seems that this is inconvenient to a majority, as they prefer to receive their email in?... you know, their actual email inboxes.

Now that you understand the somewhat bad news better, here are two good pieces of news:?Facebook didn't alter the default address on your account, meaning that the social network's whacky system only altered what is visible on your profile. And you can change your profile back to normal pretty easily.

Whew! So how do I fix this?
All you have to do is open up your profile page (hit the "About" button under your personal info), scroll down to the "Contact Info" box, and hit the "Edit" button. There you can toggle who can see which email address and whether it is displayed on your Timeline or not.?

If you're not a fan of receiving your email in your Facebook inbox, I suggest hiding that address and simply making the one you favor visible.

Why did this all happen?
We reached out to Facebook in an attempt to figure out what happened and why the email addresses on people's profiles were suddenly changed. A spokesperson for the social network offered the following response:

As we announced back in April, we?ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site.

In addition to everyone receiving an address, we?re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines.

Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we?re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address.

The spokesperson did not explain why users did not receive any sort of notice when their profiles started displaying a different email address, even though we made sure to ask about that.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
