MOSCOW (AP) ? The southern Russian city where the Red Army decisively turned back Nazi forces in a key World War II battle will once again be known as Stalingrad, at least on the days commemorating the victory, the regional legislature declared Thursday.
The city was renamed Volgograd in 1961 as part of the Soviet Union's rejection of dictator Joseph Stalin's personality cult. But the name Stalingrad is inseparable with the historic battle, which was among the bloodiest in history with combined losses of nearly 2 million people.
Regional lawmakers' decision to use the historic name in city statements on Feb. 2, the day of the Nazi defeat, as well as several other war-related dates each year, has angered many in Russia where Stalin's name and legacy continues to cause fiery disputes nearly 60 years after his death.
Russia's human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin sharply criticized the move, saying it should be declared void by court.
"This is an insult of the memory of those who died," he said, according to the Interfax news agency.
Nikolai Levichev, a senior federal lawmaker with the leftist Just Russia party, condemned the restoration of the old city name, saying "it's blasphemous to rename the great Russian city after a bloody tyrant who killed millions of his fellow citizens." Levichev added that the country won the war "despite rather than thanks to" Stalin's leadership, whose errors multiplied the Soviet losses.
Stalin led the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. Communists and other hardliners credit him with leading the country to victory in World War II and making it a nuclear superpower, while others condemn his brutal purges that killed millions of people.
President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, has avoided open public praise or criticism of Stalin, but he has restored Soviet-era symbols and tried to soften public perceptions of the dictator. Kremlin critics have seen attempts to whitewash Stalin's image as part of Putin's rollback on democracy.
In recent years, many in Russia were outraged by government-sponsored school textbooks that painted Stalin in a largely positive light and the reconstruction of a Moscow subway station that restored old Soviet national anthem lyrics praising Stalin as part of its interior decoration.
In addition to the Volgograd legislature's move to restore the old name of the city, authorities in Volgograd, St. Petersburg and the Siberian city of Chita ordered images of Stalin to be put on city buses on Feb. 2 to commemorate the historic battle.
Yan Raczynski of Memorial, a leading Russia's human rights group, was quoted as saying by Interfax that the authorities' moves highlighted the nation's failure to "legally and politically recognize the crimes committed by the Bolshevik regime, particularly Stalin and his inner circle."
In turn, communists said the decision to restore the name of Stalingrad for just a few days each year is just a half-step. Communist lawmakers met with World War II veterans and sent a letter to Putin urging the government to fully rename the city, the party said in a statement.
On Saturday, Russia plans extensive ceremonies to mark the 70th anniversary of the battle, which raged for half a year in 1942-43 with the Red Army resisting the Nazi onslaught in fierce street fighting and then encircling and capturing more than 100,000 Nazi soldiers.

THE article on the elderly woman, who was found murdered in her Bendor Drive cottage in Beverley Grove, has saddened and angered me ("Women's murders rock Bay, January 28).
Approximately five months ago my family and I moved from Bendor Drive, Beverley Grove, to another suburb, in order to find quietness and safety, as we were fully exposed to the elements from the informal squatter camp and the bottle store in Kragga Kamma Road.
The result of this combination often resulted in intolerable drunken behaviour, that led to these elements littering, urinating and defecating in public. Walking through Beverley Grove made one feel unsafe.
My wife and I love walking and often we were stopped and money asked of us.
On many occasions, I called the Kabega Park police station to report incidents and waited to see the outcome. In the majority of instances, the police did not arrive at the scene. At times I followed up with additional telephone calls, to be told that the police were on their way ? but still they did not arrive.
The last incident resulted in me actually visiting the police station to see what was recorded in the call log and, there to my astonishment, I found that my complaint based on the time of my call, was only recorded when I made the third call.
Furthermore, the bottle store sells liquor to these people, thereby fuelling the situation. The liquor is often consumed on the common off Kragga Kamma Road or just over the railway tracks toward Kamma Park.
To add to the calamity, the taxis use this area as a transit point, with music blaring, hooters going and "jumping" the robots at the corner of Kragga Kamma Road and Verdun Road.
It is easy to ask: "where is the neighbourhood watch?". Due to poor support, it collapsed, yet one must ask the question: "where are the police?"
Why should the neighbourhood watch do what the police should be doing, and after you have done your own job during the day? One feels helpless in the lawless society we live in, which is common in South Africa. The question is, what can be done to improve the protection of the innocent, law-abiding citizens of this country, or is it each one for himself?
I wish that a trustworthy official would send a response to this letter in the Herald, indicating what will be done to improve things ... someone who we can believe in and who will make things happen.

KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) ? Marcel Hirscher won a World Cup slalom for the 10th time in his career Sunday, drawing roars from a home crowd that included Austria-born Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Hirscher became the first Austrian since Klaus Kroell in 2009 to win a race at the Hahnenkamm event, one of the classic stops on the men's World Cup calendar.
Ivica Kostelic of Croatia won the combined, which adds the slalom results to those from Saturday's downhill. He became the first skier to win that competition four straight years.
Hirscher was third in the opening leg but was fastest in the second run to finish in a combined time of 1 minute, 44.34 seconds for his 17th career title. It was Hirscher's first victory in Kitzbuehel.
"If you want to be among the greatest skiers, you have to win in Kitzbuehel at least once," Hirscher said. The defending overall champion extended his lead in both the overall and slalom World Cup standings.
In the overall title race, Hirscher has 1,035 points to lead Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal by 114.
Felix Neureuther of Germany was 0.77 back in second, and Kostelic finished third, 0.91 behind Hirscher. Ted Ligety of the United States was among those who failed to finish.
Ligety skied out after five gates, failing to score points for a second straight day after missing a gate in the downhill. He finished sixth in Friday's super-G and remained in third place in the overall standings with 736 points.
"Kitz weekend started well but went sideways fast. Literally and figuratively," Ligety wrote on Twitter.
In the combined, Frenchmen Alexis Pinturault and Thomas Mermillod Blondin were second and third. Kostelic matched Norway's Kjetil Andre Aamodt's record of six straight podium finishes in this event.
Hirscher, who was beaten by Neureuther in a slalom in Wengen, Switzerland, last week, has won five races and finished on the podium 13 times this season.
With each victory worth 100 points, the Austrian has now gained a stunning 700 points in eight slaloms this season. Neureuther trails him by 134 points in second.
"It's not getting easier, the pressure is immense," Hirscher said. "If you get so many podiums in one season, you expect yourself to finish top five in each race."
Hirscher used an attacking yet error-free second run to win the race after trailing Stefano Gross and Giuliano Razzoli in the opening run. Both Italians, however, had costly mistakes in their final runs and finished 11th and fourth, respectively.
"It was a very, very tough race," Neureuther said. "In the second run, I raced tactically smart. Marcel showed the aggression you need to win here. He was always going to be the man to beat."
Kostelic called himself fortunate after finishing on the podium despite being more than 0.4 seconds off the top three in his opening run.
"I was lucky today and I wasn't expecting a top-three finish anymore," said Kostelic, adding that he admired the run of Austrian veteran Benjamin Raich. "I was inspired by the way Benni was skiing today."
Raich posted the second-fastest time in the final leg, just 0.10 slower than Hirscher, to climb from 25th to fifth place.
In a difficult first run, 28 racers failed to finish. The slalom gates were placed by Italian technical coach Jacques Theolier after an initial course set by Croatia's Ante Kostelic, father of Ivica and former women's overall champion Janica, was rejected as being too difficult by the international ski federation.
According to men's race director Guenter Hujara, the course was "unskiable" and Kostelic refused to change it, prompting the jury to ask the Italian team to replace the gates.
The new course still proved challenging, with Ligety, Mario Matt of Austria, Manfred Moelgg of Italy, last year's winner Cristian Deville of Italy and slalom world champion Jean-Baptiste Grange of France unable to finish.
This is the last season Kitzbuehel will run the classic combined event of downhill and two slalom runs on consecutive days. The competition is likely to be replaced next year by a super-combined event with a speed race and one slalom run on the same day.
A limited group of slalom skiers will take part in a city event in Moscow on Tuesday, the last World Cup race before the Feb. 5-17 world championships in Schladming, Austria.

Jan. 27, 2013 ? The spread of breast cancer to distant organs within the body, an event that often leads to death, appears in many cases to involve the loss of a key protein, according to UC San Francisco researchers, whose new discoveries point to possible targets for therapy.
In the January 27, 2013 online edition of Nature Cell Biology, UCSF scientists describe for the first time how the protein, known as GATA3 -- which is abnormal or absent in many cases of human breast cancer -- normally acts downstream in biochemical pathways to prevent the distant spread of cancer, an event called metastasis.
The discovery points to a biochemical control point that simultaneously holds in check several key events required for tumor cells to successfully spread.
"When GATA3 is present, it turns off many genes that are active in metastasis," said Zena Werb, PhD, a UCSF professor of anatomy who led the research. "We now have identified the molecular mechanisms involved."
The key finding of the new study is that GATA3 acts downstream biochemically to activate a molecule -- obscure until now -- called microRNA29b. MicroRNA29b in turn stops protein production from other genes that play vital roles in metastasis.
The absence or loss of GATA3 can free cancerous cells to break free from their defined roles and tethers within a tumor, to move away from the tumor mass, to induce cancer-promoting inflammation, and to stimulate the development of new blood vessels that can help spreading cancerous cells regrow as tumors in new locations.
"People knew that some of these genes were turned on in some cancers, but they did not know they were turned on because GATA3 and microRNA29b were turned off," Werb said. "If you have 20 genes that are becoming less active all at once due to microRNA29b, it could have a profound effect."
Working with mice, the researchers found that restoring microRNA29b to one of the most deadly types of breast cancer stopped metastasis. But the researchers also found that if they knocked out the microRNA29b, tumors spread even in the presence of GATA3, suggesting that microRNA29b can be the driver of metastasis.
In the mouse models of breast cancer studied by Werb's team, GATA3 normally restrains cancerous cells from breaking away from the main tumor and migrating to other organs.
It might be possible, Werb said, to develop drugs that inhibit breast cancer metastasis by re-activating these controls in cancerous cells that have lost the normal protein.
Many researchers who study early stages of cancer focus on abnormal genes and proteins that cause cells to expand their numbers rapidly, a hallmark of cancer.
However, the ability to spread to distant places and to eventually cause lethal complications requires not only cell division and tumor growth, but also changes in how the cancerous cell negotiates with its surroundings. This relationship must be altered to permit cancer to spread, according to earlier research findings by Werb and others.
"Many of the key processes in cancer that GATA3 suppresses take place outside the cell, in the surrounding environment," she said.
GATA3 is a master control for luminal cells, which line the milk-carrying ducts of the breast. In essence, GATA3 dictates the defining characteristics of a normal breast cell, Werb said.
Luminal breast cancers are the most common form of the disease, and the hormones estrogen and progesterone drive their growth. Loss of the normal GATA3 protein as luminal breast cancers evolve is associated with a greater risk of death, Werb said, and occurs in roughly 10 percent of luminal breast cancer cases.
But, along with many other proteins, GATA3 also is absent in "triple negative," breast cancers, which are more often fatal. Triple negative breast cancers, which disproportionately affect black women and younger women, do not depend on the hormones, nor do they require a third growth factor, called HER2.
Triple negative breast cancers, which account for roughly one-in-five breast cancers, have been more difficult to target successfully with newer treatments.
"The targeting we would like to do is to give back microRNA29b specifically to breast tumor cells to prevent metastasis," Werb said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama announced Friday he would appoint longtime foreign policy adviser and popular West Wing staffer Denis McDonough to lead his staff.
Obama, appearing with McDonough at the White House, called him indispensable and "a great friend to me and everybody who works here at the White House."
McDonough is taking over the chief of staff job from Jack Lew, Obama's nominee for Treasury secretary.
Obama said McDonough has played a key role in every one of the major national security decisions of his presidency, including the end of the war in Iraq, winding down the war in Afghanistan, responses to natural disasters in Haiti and Japan and repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members.
McDonough's place in Obama's inner circle was illustrated during the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011. He is among those whose images are captured in a White House photograph seated in the situation room with Obama and other senior officials watching the raid unfold.
Obama complimented McDonough for being so humble, visiting troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center without fanfare or cameras to learn about the needs of the troops. "Then he comes back here to the White House, and he gets it done. That's the kind of focus and the kind of heart I want here in the White House," Obama said.
He said McDonough also is tough, having been raised in Minnesota as one of 11 children. And he teased the former St. John's University football player as making up for modest talents with determination and a high tolerance for pain.
Earlier, McDonough worked as a foreign policy specialist in Congress, including as a senior foreign policy adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., before moving to Obama's Senate office.
McDonough's new role was previously filled by Rahm Emanuel, William Daly and Pete Rouse, as interim chief of staff, before Lew.
Other senior personnel shifts were made Friday, including the appointment of Obama chief congressional lobbyist Rob Nabors as McDonough's deputy for policy. Vice President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Tony Blinken, is taking over McDonough's post as deputy national security advisor.
Katy Kale is being promoted from to assistant to the president for management and administration after serving as the deputy for that post. Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco, head of the Justice Department's National Security Division, was selected to take over for John Brennan as advisor for homeland security and counterterrorism once his nomination as head of the Central Intelligence Agency is confirmed.
White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer is being promoted to senior advisor. Pfeiffer deputy Jennifer Palmieri will take over as communications director.
Miguel Rodriguez is being named to take over the top lobbying post after serving under Nabors, and Obama campaign staffer David Simas is being named a deputy senior advisor for communications and strategy.
The White House announced Friday that Chris Lu, an aide who has been with Obama since his time as a senator and most recently managed relations with his Cabinet, was leaving his post. The job will be taken over by Danielle Gray, formerly deputy director of the National Economic Council. In a statement, Obama praised Lu for overseeing "one of the most stable and effective Cabinets in history" and said he's asked him to consider taking on another administration job after he takes some time off.

Will you be sticking with your credit card longer than your spouse? For some Americans, the answer will be "yes." Overall, we are are pretty faithful to our plastic. According to Experian, the average time a credit card account remains open is approximately 129 months ? or 10.75 years.
Contrast that with the fact that the U.S. Census Bureau reports that in 2009, first marriages that ended in divorce lasted a median of 8 years for men and women overall. The median time from marriage to separation was seven?years.
It appears that Americans are also more loyal to their cards than their counterparts across the pond. Research by MoneySupermarket found that credit card users in the U.K. have remained loyal to their card provider for six years on average.

Is loyalty to a card issuer good or bad? On the plus side, holding on to your cards for a long time may help your credit rating. FICO High Achievers ? those with FICO scores of 785 or above ??opened their oldest credit card account 25 years ago on average; and the average credit account is 11 years old. Plus, if you've been a good customer for many years, you may be able to negotiate a lower interest rate or get a fee waived more easily than a new customer.
On the other hand, issuers are trying to woo new new customers with flashy promotions, such as the Starwood Preferred Guest Card from American Express that currently allows new cardholders to earn 10,000 points after their first purchase, and 15,000 points after spending $10,000 within six months. Just try matching the British Airways credit card 100,000 miles sign-up bonus with your current card. Fat chance it even comes close.

But that doesn't mean you should be fickle.
Perhaps the best strategy is to plan on a long-term relationship with your cards, and choose accordingly. But check in periodically to make sure they still offer you the best deal. If not, let them know you think you can do better ??and why. They may be able to able to come up with a reason for you to stay.
If not, and you do break up with your credit card company, you don't have to end the relationship completely. You can still keep the account open in case you decide you want to come back later. Just think of it as keeping your options open.

NYON, Switzerland (AP) -UEFA has ordered Turkish club Fenerbahce to play a Europa League match in an empty stadium after fans threw objects during a game against Borussia Moenchengladbach.
The Istanbul club will play behind closed doors against Bate Borisov on Feb. 21 in a last-32, second-leg match.
UEFA says its disciplinary panel also fined Fenerbahce ?40,000 ($53,500).
UEFA revoked a deferred sanction after similar incidents during a Champions League playoff round match against Spartak Moscow on Aug. 29. Fenerbahce was eliminated then, and joined the second-tier Europa League group stage.
Fenerbahce can appeal the sanctions.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's army unleashed a barrage of rocket and artillery fire on rebel-held areas in a central province Friday as part of a widening offensive against fighters seeking to oust President Bashar Assad. At least 80 people were killed in fighting nationwide, according to activist groups.
The United Nations said a record number of Syrians streamed into Jordan this month, doubling the population of the kingdom's already-cramped refugee camp to 65,000. Over 30,000 people arrived in Zaatari in January ? 6,000 in the past two days alone, the U.N. said.
The newcomers are mostly families, women, children and elderly who fled from southern Syria, said Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She said the UNHCR was working with the Jordanian government to open a second major camp nearby by the end of this month.
Many of the new arrivals at Zaatari are from the southern town of Daraa, where the uprising against Assad first erupted nearly two years ago, the Britain-based Save the Children said Friday.
Five buses, crammed with "frightened and exhausted people who fled with what little they could carry," pull up every hour at the camp, said Saba al-Mobasat, an aid worker with Save the Children.
The exodus reflected the latest spike in violence in Syria's civil war. The conflict began in March 2011 after a peaceful uprising against Assad, inspired by the Arab Spring wave of revolutions that toppled leaders in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen, turned violent.
Activists said the army recently brought in military reinforcements to the central province of Homs and launched a renewed offensive aimed at retaking patches of territory that have been held by rebels for months.
An amateur video posted online by activists showed rockets slamming into buildings in the rebel-held town of Rastan, just north of the provincial capital, Homs. Heavy gunfire could be heard in the background.
Another video showed thick black and gray smoke rising from a building in the besieged city. "The city of Homs is burning ... day and night, the shelling of Homs doesn't stop," the narrator is heard saying.
Troops also battled rebels around Damascus in an effort to dislodge opposition fighters who have set up enclaves in surrounding towns and villages. The troops fired artillery shells Friday at several districts, including Zabadani and Daraya, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, said regime warplanes carried out airstrikes on the suburb of Douma, the largest patch of rebel-held ground near Damascus.
The Observatory, which like the LCC relies on a network of activists around Syria, said at least 80 people were killed in violence across the country Friday, including 11 in Homs.
Other video showed devastation in the Damascus neighborhood of Arbeen, following what activists said were two airstrikes there. A bleeding, wounded man can be seen being helped out of the rubble of the destroyed building. The videos appeared consistent with Associated Press reporting on the fighting.
Last month, the UNHCR said it needed $1 billion to aid Syrians in the Mideast, and that half of that money was required to help refugees in Jordan.
The agency says 597,240 refugees have registered or are awaiting registration with the UNHCR in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. Some countries have higher estimates, noting many Syrians have found accommodations without registering, relying on their own resources and savings.
In a rare gesture, Syria's Interior Ministry called on those who fled the country during the civil war to return, including regime opponents. It said the government will help hundreds of thousands of citizens return whether they left "legally or illegally."
Syrian opposition figures abroad who want to take part in reconciliation talks will also be allowed back, according to a ministry statement carried late Thursday by the state SANA news agency.
If they "have the desire to participate in the national dialogue, they would be allowed to enter Syria," it said.
The proposed talks are part of Assad's initiative to end the conflict that started as peaceful protests in March 2011 but turned into a civil war. Tens of thousands of activists, their family members and opposition supporters remain jailed by the regime, according to international activist groups.
Opposition leaders repeatedly have rejected any talks that include Assad, insisting he must step down. The international community backs that demand, but Assad has clung to power, vowing to crush the armed opposition.
More than 60,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, according to the U.N.
Activists also said two cars packed with explosives blew up near a military intelligence building in the Syrian-controlled part of the Golan Heights, killing eight. Most of the dead were members of the Syrian military, the Observatory said.
The Syrian government had no comment on the attacks, which occurred Thursday night in the town of Quneitra, and nobody claimed responsibility for them.
Car bombs and suicide attacks targeting Syrian troops and government institutions have been the hallmark of Islamic militants fighting in Syria alongside rebels trying to topple Assad.
Quneitra is on the cease-fire line between Syria and Israel, which controls most of the Golan Heights after capturing the strategic territory from Syria in the 1967 war.

PITTSBURGHWhen writing or speaking, good grammar helps people make themselves be understood. But when used to concoct a long computer password, grammar good or bad provides crucial hints that can help someone crack that password, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have demonstrated.
A team led by Ashwini Rao, a software engineering Ph.D. student in the Institute for Software Research, developed a password-cracking algorithm that took into account grammar and tested it against 1,434 passwords containing 16 or more characters. The grammar-aware cracker surpassed other state-of-the-art password crackers when passwords had grammatical structures, with 10 percent of the dataset cracked exclusively by the team's algorithm.
"We should not blindly rely on the number of words or characters in a password as a measure of its security," Rao concluded. She will present the findings on Feb. 20 at the Association for Computing Machinery's Conference on Data and Application Security and Privacy (CODASPY 2013) in San Antonio, Texas.
Basing a password on a phrase or short sentence makes it easier for a user to remember, but the grammatical structure dramatically narrows the possible combinations and sequences of words, she noted.
Likewise, grammar, whether good or bad, necessitates using different parts of speech nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns that also can undermine security. That's because pronouns are far fewer in number than verbs, verbs fewer than adjectives and adjectives fewer than nouns. So a password composed of "pronoun-verb-adjective-noun," such as "Shehave3cats" is inherently easier to decode than "Andyhave3cats," which follows "noun-verb-adjective-noun." A password that incorporated more nouns would be even more secure.
"I've seen password policies that say, 'Use five words,'" Rao said. "Well, if four of those words are pronouns, they don't add much security."
For instance, the team found that the five-word passphrase "Th3r3 can only b3 #1!" was easier to guess than the three-word passphrase "Hammered asinine requirements." Neither the number of words nor the number of characters determined password strength when grammar was involved. The researchers calculated that "My passw0rd is $uper str0ng!" is 100 times stronger as a passphrase than "Superman is $uper str0ng!," which in turn is 10,000 times stronger than "Th3r3 can only b3 #1!"
The research was an outgrowth of a class project for a masters-level course at CMU, Rao said. She and Gananand Kini, a fellow CMU graduate student, and Birendra Jha, a Ph.D. student at MIT, built their password cracker by building a dictionary for each part of speech and identifying a set of grammatical sequences, such as "determiner-adjective-noun" and "noun-verb-adjective-adverb," that might be used to generate passphrases.
Rao said the grammar-aware password cracker was intended only as a proof of concept and no attempt has been made to optimize its performance. But it is only a matter of time before someone does, she predicted.

The latest version of "The Ultimate Fighter" debuted on Tuesday night. For the first time in many, many seasons, I enjoyed the show. Instead of focusing on the animosity between coaches, it brought out the stories of each of the fighters. It was a welcome change. Here were the biggest moments of the two-hour premiere:
-- The opening montage: From the start, TUF looked different than it had before. The filming style felt more like an "NFL Films" production than previous TUFs. That started with the opening montage, with close-ups of the coaches, Dana White and the fighters talking about why they want to be on the show.
-- Families fighters and friends being allowed in the gym: Seeing Adam Cella's family celebrate after his win set the tone for the rest of the show. On previous TUFs, fighters would talk about their devotion to their amily and friends, but it was hard to connect with them when all we saw were pictures. Now, as the season goes on, we'll know who each man is fighting for much more richly.
-- Zak Cummings' knockout of Nik Fekete: It was so quick that I wasn't sure what happened. The replay showed Fekete didn't protect himself when throwing a kick, and that ended his show at making "The Ultimate Fighter."
-- Sonnen needling Jones over Bubba McDaniel: The "Chael Shtick" didn't come out much on Tuesday night, and that's a good thing. Over the course of the show, it would get old very quickly. But Sonnen's subtle, sarcastic picking at Jones was fun, particularly when it came to Jones' teammate and if Jones would pick him for his team.
-- "I grew up on food stamps, powdered milk and spam." With the families around, there were more tears than usual for the opening show. No episode was more moving than Kito Andrews saying goodbye to his kids, and talking about why it's so important for him to win. Unfortunately, Andrews lost the decision.
-- Uriah Hall's decision over Andy Endz: The two put on such a great fight that Sonnen stood and cheered for it. Afterwards, they shared a quiet moment where Hall thanked Endz, and Endz told Hall to win the show. It was one of the moments that reminded fans that most fighters support each other, even when they haven't met before.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks opened lower on Thursday, a day after Apple Inc reported revenue that missed expectations, tanking the stock and weighing on technology shares.
As the most valuable U.S. company and a heavy weight in both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 <.ndx>, a decline in Apple shares has an outsized impact on the broader market. Apple dropped 10.5 percent to $459.84 in early trading.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 21.73 points, or 0.16 percent, at 13,801.06. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 2.16 points, or 0.14 percent, at 1,492.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 24.98 points, or 0.79 percent, at 3,128.69.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When President Barack Obama announced a raft of proposals in the biggest U.S. gun-control push in decades, Cam Edwards, host of Sportsman Channel's "Cam & Company" talk show, wasted no time siding with the National Rifle Association.
"Assault weapon is a made-up name for a gun I can ban," said Edwards, an avowed Second Amendment advocate, who later in the program read, word for word, the NRA's statement in response to Obama's announcement.
Edwards, whose show is produced by NRA News, is one of the cable TV personalities the NRA hopes will promote the right of Americans to bear arms. That effort might become more important if public and political sentiments harden in favor of gun control in the wake of the Newtown shootings that claimed 26 lives.
Another Program, Outdoor Channel's "Friends of the NRA," is hosted by former baseball player Matt Duff and champion shooter Jessie Harrison Duff and is an offshoot of the group that raised more than $200 million for national and local programs "that ensures the availability of quality training and educational opportunities," the group says on its site.
In the show, the two hosts visit NRA banquets and fundraisers as they tour the country.
The NRA produces or sponsors six cable TV shows that appear on either the Outdoor or Sportsman channels, which are each available in more than 30 million homes, including many gun owners.
"They're consolidating their base," said Larry Gerbrandt, a former cable TV executive who founded Valuation Partners, which appraises media assets for acquisitions and other purposes. "It's a lot easier to get your message across with video than it was a printed pamphlet.
Edwards, whose show started and continues online and on SirusXM's conservative Patriot channel, said on his TV show on January 16 that he "is not a spokesman for the NRA" and that NRA News is separate from the lobbying group. The NRA did not return calls and emails.
Other shows, which are mostly history or competition programs, help the NRA promote the gun owning lifestyle and are an important advertising platform for advertisers such as gun makers Smith & Wesson Holding Corp or Remington Arms Co Ltd..
It is also a potential profit center for the NRA, which produces the shows and sells most of the advertising. Programs on the Sportsman Channel can charge premium advertising rates, said Graig Hale, the channel's programming vice-president, because it is watched by men aged 25-54 years who are hard for advertisers to reach.
"Sometimes the shows can be controversial," said Hale. "But they are mostly about a range of topics that affect the sportsman."
One of the Sportsman Channel's highest rated shows is "Guns and Gold," a NRA-produced program in which two officials from the National Firearms Museum tour the country to value heirlooms and ancient guns.
The NRA also sponsors the shooting competition show "3-Gun Nation" on the Sportsman Channel and Outdoor Channel's "American Rifleman," which reviews products and airs stories about gun owners from the NRA's "American Rifleman" magazine.
Edwards' one-hour show, airing nightly at 5pm Eastern, is the only program that overtly supports the Second Amendment, which is at the center of NRA's promotional efforts.
NRA members viewpoints can come through in other shows. In one episode of "Friends of the NRA," the hosts visit a wild-game chef and NRA member who tells them that, in the past, there was never an issue of losing the right to bear arms and hunt.
"(Now) that's all you hear," he added.
During the episode, hosts Matt and Jessie Duff attend a wild game cook-off that is followed by a message urging viewers to "support Friends of the NRA and the NRA Foundation by attending a banquet today."
Not surprisingly, the shows attract a large dose of hunting and shooting ads. Nearly two dozen advertisers crammed into one recent 30-minute episode of "American Rifleman," including Crimson Trace laser sights, hunting gear discounter Cheaper Than Dirt and gun makers Smith & Wesson and Remington.
Many of the same names also sponsor "Cam & Company," but the heaviest advertiser in one recent episode was the NRA itself with three ads that criticized Obama for sending his children to a school that is protected by armed guards, while failing to embrace the NRA plan to arm teachers and others in schools.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) ? A chemist at a state crime lab tampered with drug evidence, authorities said Sunday in Massachusetts, where another chemist at a different lab was accused last year of faking test results in a scandal that threw thousands of criminal cases into question.
Sonja Farak, of Northampton, who works at a lab in Amherst, in western Massachusetts, removed a substance from a case file that tested positive for cocaine and replaced it with one that did not test positive, state Attorney General Martha Coakley said.
Farak, 35, was arrested Saturday. She is also charged with possession of heroin and cocaine.
The lab contacted state police Friday to report a discrepancy in inventory, Coakley said at a Boston news conference.
She said that officials do not believe Farak's alleged tampering will undermine evidence.
"On its face, the allegations against this chemist do not implicate the reliability of testing done or fairness to defendants," she said.
Last month, the other chemist, Annie Dookhan, was indicted on 27 charges in a case that threatens to unravel thousands of drug convictions. Dookhan, also 35, of Franklin, resigned in March during an internal investigation by the state Department of Public Health. State police closed the Boston lab where she worked in August after taking over its operation and discovering the extent of Dookhan's alleged misconduct.
Unlike the allegations against Dookhan, the accusations against Farak do not involve falsification of tests or dry labbing, which is visually identifying samples instead of performing a required chemical test, the attorney general said.
Dookhan has pleaded not guilty to various charges.
Farak does not have a listed phone number and it's not clear whether she has a lawyer.
The Amherst lab has been closed temporarily and chemists will be transferred to Sudbury, Col. Timothy Alben, head of the state police, said at the news conference.
Farak is due to be arraigned Tuesday in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown.
