Keeping the fluids topped off isn?t always enough. Some fluids have to be flushed every 60,000 miles, like transmission and differential fluid. Maintaining, changing, and flushing your car?s fluids will prevent more serious problems from developing down the road.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Release Date Is July 9th In South Korea

While it?s been a while since the Samsung Galaxy S3 was released in Europe, North America and other parts of the world, it?s time for the Koreans to enjoy the new smartphone as well (after all Samsung is a company based in their own country).

The Korean version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is some kind of hybrid, a combination between the international version and the US one. The device will come packed with a quad-core Exynos processor (just like the international model), but it will also come with LTE support. And yes, Samsung finally announced a release date for the Galaxy S3 LTE, which is July 9th. The company specifies that the smartphone will be available at three carriers meaning SK Telekom, LG U+, and KT.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE features 2GB of RAM abd DMB TV tuning which is great, but unfortunately the battery will remain the same 2,100 mAH. Taking into consideration that the quad-core processors and LTE don?t ?get along? so well, the battery life won?t be as long as it should. And it?s hard to believe that Samsung has quickly found a way to perfectly integrate quad-core CPUs with LTE. ?However, it?s not a big compromise to make, after all it?s the Samsung Galaxy S3 is a great device despite these minor issue.

If we compare the international version of the Galaxy S3 with the US model, many of the specs are quite the same. However, there are a few major differences due to the LTE technology existent in the United States. First of all, the international model sports a Exynos quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 processor while the US version packs a Snapdragon dual-core 1.5 GHz. In memory terms, the international version has 1GB of RAM while the North Americans enjoy 2 GB of RAM. Both models have Gorilla Glass screen protection and the same dimensions and weight.

Physicists identify new quantum state allowing 3 -- but not 2 -- atoms to stick together

A Kansas State University-led quantum mechanics study has discovered a new bound state in atoms that may help scientists better understand matter and its composition.

The yet-unnamed bound state, which the physicists simply refer to as "our state" in their study, applies to three identical atoms loosely bound together -- a behavior called three-body bound states in quantum mechanics. In this state, three atoms can stick together in a group but two cannot. Additionally, in some cases, the three atoms can stick together even when any two are trying to repel each other and break the connection.

"It's really counterintuitive because not only is the pair interaction too weak to bind two atoms together, it's also actively trying to push the atoms apart, which is clearly not the goal when you want things to stick together," said Brett Esry, university distinguished professor of physics at Kansas State University and the study's lead investigator.

Esry, along with Kansas State University postdoctoral researcher Nicolais Guevara and University of Colorado-Boulder colleague Yujun Wang -- a Kansas State University graduate -- calculated the quantum state in their study, "New Class of Three-Body States," which was recently published in Physical Review Letters.

The state is similar to Efimov three-body states, a loosely-bound quantum state first predicted by Russian physicist Vitaly Efimov in the early 1970s. Physicists were able to first observe Efimov three-body states more than 30 years later through an experiment with ultracold atomic gases in 2006. These gases are one-billionth of a degree kelvin above absolute zero -- a temperature that only exists in a handful of laboratories in the world. Esry said similar ultracold atomic gases are needed to observe their new quantum state as well since it can only exist at this temperature.

While Efimov three-body states only occur in ultracold conditions with atoms classified as bosons, the state found by Esry and colleagues applies to both bosons and fermions -- the two particle types that all matter can be classified as.

Additionally, the new quantum state exists in a pocket between short-ranged and long-ranged interactions. Short- and long-ranged interactions -- or forces -- are the distance at which the particle interactions are effective. With a long-ranged force, the particles have a greater distance between them and do not have to touch to interact and influence each other. With a short-ranged force, however, the particles must be in much closer proximity and interact similar to billiard balls colliding with one another, Esry said. The Efimov three-body states only exist for short-ranged interactions.

"The three-body states that we found are formed by interactions that are neither short- nor long-ranged," Esry said. "Instead, they lie right at the border between the two. So, more than anything, finding this new quantum state fills in a knowledge gap about three-body systems and quantum mechanics, which have been studied for centuries by physicists -- including Sir Isaac Newton studying the Earth, moon and sun."

Scientists may also find uses for the quantum state in experiments with ultracold atomic gases.

"That's really the nature of basic research," Esry said. "We're trying things that hopefully will pay off for somebody 20 years or longer down the line. Efimov had to wait 35 years to see his states actually be seen and used as a way to understand these three-body systems. We hope we don't have to wait that long."

Esry and colleagues will continue exploring this quantum state and to uncover how combinations of bosons and fermions behave in it.

Shrinking leaves point to climate change

University of Adelaide researchers have discovered that recent climate change is causing leaves of some Australian plants to narrow in size.

The study, which is the first of its kind in the world, highlights that plant species are already responding to changes in climate. The results are published online today in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

Researchers analysed leaves from herbarium specimens of Narrow-leaf Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa subsp. angustissima) dating from the 1880s to the present. The study focused on specimens from South Australia's Flinders Ranges.

The analysis revealed a 2mm decrease in leaf width (within a total range of 1-9mm) over 127 years across the region. Between 1950 and 2005, there has been a 1.2?C increase in maximum temperatures in South Australia but little change in rainfall in the Flinders Ranges.

"Climate change is often discussed in terms of future impacts, but changes in temperature over recent decades have already been ecologically significant," says Dr Greg Guerin, a Postdoctoral Fellow with the University of Adelaide's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and lead author of the study.

"Climate change is driving adaptive shifts within plant species and leaf shape has demonstrated adaptive significance in relation to climate.

"Our results indicate that leaf width is closely linked to maximum temperatures, and plants from warmer latitudes typically have narrower leaves.

"In the case of Narrow-leaf Hopbush, we can significantly link the changes in leaf width to changes in climate."

Dr Guerin says some Australian plant species have greater potential to respond to and cope with increasing temperatures than others. "It's important to understand how plants cope with changing climates, because species that are more adaptive to change may be good candidates for environmental restoration efforts.

"Other species in the region have less potential to adapt. These species may rely more heavily on migration ? moving from location to location where the climate is favourable ? but this can be problematic in a landscape fragmented by human activity," Dr Guerin says.

Actor Andy Griffith dies in North Carolina at 86

(Reuters) - Actor Andy Griffith, whose portrayal of a small-town sheriff made "The Andy Griffith Show" one of television's most enduring programs, died on Tuesday at his North Carolina home at age 86.

Griffith died at about 7 a.m. at his home on Roanoke Island, Dare County Sheriff J.D. Doughtie said.

His wife of three decades, Cindi Griffith, was at his bedside and issued a statement saying: "I cannot imagine life without Andy, but I take comfort and strength in God's Grace and in the knowledge that Andy is at peace and with God."

The family said Griffith "has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island," but did not elaborate.

Griffith created another memorable TV character, the folksy defense lawyer in "Matlock" in the 1980s and 1990s, but it was his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor on the "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s that gave him a place in television history.

The show depicted life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith's own hometown, Mount Airy, in that state.

"North Carolina has lost its favorite son," Governor Beverly Perdue said. "Andy Griffith graciously stepped into the living rooms of generations of Americans, always with the playful charm that made him the standard by which entertainers would be measured for decades ... In an increasingly complicated world, we all yearn for the days of Mayberry."

President Barack Obama said he was saddened to hear of Griffith's death.

"A performer of extraordinary talent, Andy was beloved by generations of fans and revered by entertainers who followed in his footsteps," Obama said in a statement.

Ron Howard, who played Griffith's son Opie on the show and went on to become an Oscar-winning director, praised him by telling Entertainment Weekly's website, "He was fantastic. There was a fantastic equilibrium between his love of laughter and jokes and funny stories and songs and all that, and then he could turn on a dime and be the utmost professional."

There was little crime to fight in Mayberry so the stories centered on the sheriff and his interactions with the quirky townspeople.

"The basic theme of our show was love," Griffith said in a 2003 interview with CNN. "All the characters loved each other. And all the actors loved each other, too."

The show, a situation comedy, was an entertaining diversion for viewers from the social and political upheavals of the 1960s.

"It was at a point where America was really in turmoil," executive producer John Watkin told USA Today. "'The Andy Griffith Show' and Mayberry represented in some sense this kind of idealized view of what America was. It contains such a heart, such a sense of community."

Some said Griffith's Mayberry was too sanitized, with none of the strife generated by the anti-war and civil rights protests of the time. In fact, there were no regular black characters on the show.

"We tried in every way to get that to happen but we were unable to do it," Griffith told USA Today in discussing Mayberry's all-white population.

Griffith was born June 1, 1926, and had ambitions of being a preacher. At the University of North Carolina he earned a degree in dramatic arts in 1949 and started performing in singing groups.

A RUBE WATCHING FOOTBALL

He first made a name with a comedy recording, "What It Was, Was Football," a spoof of a rube trying to follow the action at his first football game. That led to an appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," and from there Griffith starred in both the stage and film versions of "No Time for Sergeants."

He made a big impact as a dramatic actor in his first movie, 1957's "A Face in the Crowd," playing a scheming drifter whose aw-shucks persona catapults him to success as a television show host until his dark side was exposed.

Griffith later played a small-town sheriff in a television episode of "The Danny Thomas Show," which led to "The Andy Griffith Show."

Don Knotts, who had appeared with Griffith in the stage and screen versions of "No Time for Sergeants," had seen "The Danny Thomas Show" episode and suggested the sheriff would need a deputy in a full-fledged TV series. He came aboard and his portrayal of bungling and overeager Deputy Barney Fife won Knotts five Emmy awards.

"When Don joined the show, by the second episode, I knew that Don should be funny and I should play straight for him," Griffith told CNN.

The Griffith-Knotts friendship endured until Knotts' death in February 2006.

"The Andy Griffith Show" ran from 1960 until 1968, the year it reached No. 1 in television ratings. Griffith decided to leave that year, and the show continued without him using new characters and a new name, before being canceled in 1971.

But "The Andy Griffith Show" has lived on ever since in syndication and on cable television, creating a cottage industry of fan clubs, websites and memorabilia.

"I wanted to prove that I could play something else, but there were 249 episodes out there of 'Mayberry,' and it was aired every day. It was hard to escape," movie database IMDB quoted him as saying.

On Broadway, Griffith was nominated for two Tony awards, in 1956 as a featured actor in "No Time for Sergeants" and in 1960 as an actor in the musical "Destry Rides Again."

He often recorded and won a Grammy award for his 1996 gospel album "I Love To Tell The Story."

Griffith spent most of his later years in the Atlantic Coast town of Manteo, North Carolina.

He was married and divorced twice before he wed Cindi Knight Griffith in 1983. He had two children.

BOULOGNE-SUR-MER, France (AP) ? Once upon a time in Hollywood, the cry was "Run, Forrest, Run!" The message was not lost on Peter Sagan at the Tour de France.

The 22-year-old Slovakian won Tuesday's ride toward the English Channel in dramatic fashion, and then went cinematic ? pumping his arms in the running style of fictional antihero Forrest Gump at the behest of his Liquigas teammates.

Competing in his first Tour, Sagan earned his second victory in the three full stages so far. He is picking up where he left off in May at the Tour of California, where he won a stunning five of eight stages.

On Tuesday, he mastered a tricky uphill finish and schooled many older riders on the last of five small climbs over the 122-mile ride from Orchies to the fishing port of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

With the pack split up because of crashes, Sagan bolted ahead with less than 300 meters left. He crossed the line several lengths ? and one second ? ahead of 46 other riders in his wake.

Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara was one of them, and he retained the leader's yellow jersey for a fourth straight day after winning the opening-day prologue on Saturday.

Tuesday's ride marked the first crash-related withdrawals from this 99th Tour, which ends July 22 on Paris' Champs-Elysees.

The race remains wide open. After flat early stages, the Swiss rider has 43 rivals within a minute of his overall time, and that's likely to change when the pack heads to the Alps in the second week and the Pyrenees in the third, if not sooner.

Overall, Cancellara leads runner-up Bradley Wiggins, who is hoping to become Britain's first Tour winner, and third-place Sylvain Chavanel ? both seven seconds back. Defending champ Cadel Evans of Australia rose one spot to seventh, 17 seconds behind. Sagan was 15th, another six seconds slower.

With Sagan's Stage 1 victory Sunday, he became the youngest rider to win a Tour stage since Lance Armstrong in 1993 at 21. Even leaders of rival teams were marveling at his skill and potential after Tuesday's victory.

"You've got to give Sagan credit for the way he's riding at the minute. When you see something like that you just have to stand back and admire it, and smile and say well done," Team Sky manager Dave Brailsford said.

"It's a bit like watching Messi playing football or something isn't it?" he said, referring to Barcelona's Lionel Messi. "He's winning with such apparent ease at the moment that it's pretty phenomenal."

Sagan enjoys putting on a show for fans. To that end, he churned his arms, as a runner might, in a nod to the title character in the movie "Forrest Gump."

"It's a thing I'd discussed with my teammates about what kind of gesture I'd do on the line," Sagan said. "Everybody said, 'Do a Forrest Gump' because when he was told to run, he ran. And when I'm told to win, I win."

Sagan also showed a humbler side, saying he felt honored to ride alongside the likes of Vincenzo Nibali and two-time Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso on the Italian squad.

"With Basso, I feel like I'm on the level of someone who would shine his shoes," Sagan said.

The top standings didn't change much on Tuesday.

But Belgium's Philippe Gilbert, who last year had 18 victories in all competitions and was the top-ranked rider in the standings, went tumbling after getting hit from behind. He clambered back onto his bike with scrapes on his left leg and arm and kept going, but lost more time to change a shoe damaged in the crash, said his BMC team manager, John Lelangue.

Gilbert straggled across the finish line 7:46 after Sagan, plunging to 104th place overall. The Belgian began the day in seventh place, 13 seconds behind Cancellara. Gilbert's slide meant Evans rose a notch.

It was one of at least four crashes that marred the stage as riders jostled to get up front for climbs near the finish, including one within the last mile. Some riders also had mechanical troubles and flat tires.

"The group was nervous. Everyone wanted to be up front," Sagan told France-2 television. "There were a lot of crashes. ... It was a very dangerous stage."

Five riders broke out early through northern France's wheat fields and former steel industry hubs, speeding through medieval villages like Isbergues ? named for a sister of Charlemagne who, legend has it, could cure skin and eye illnesses. But the pack of contenders overcame them near the end.

With about 30 miles to go, several riders crashed in a flat portion of road through a wheat field in a slight turn.

Sky's Kanstantsin Sivtsov of Belarus became the first competitor to drop out this year. A Tour medical report said he broke his left shin and was facing surgery.

Rabobank's Maarten Tjallingii broke his left hip in the same accident but finished the stage. Team spokesman Richard Plugge said the Dutch rider was taken to a hospital in the Netherlands for surgery.

And some 18 miles later, another crash sent riders flying off the shoulder of the road on both sides. One flew into a wire fence. Spain's Jose Joaquin Rojas of Movistar got into an ambulance and was hospitalized with a broken collarbone, the medical report said.

American veteran Tom Danielson, who at eighth was the top American finisher at last year's Tour, crashed hard but finished the stage. A hospital exam showed he had separated his right shoulder ? the same one that the East Lyme, Conn., cyclist hurt in a crash in the 2007 Spanish Vuelta, Garmin-Sharp team spokeswoman Marya Pongrace said in an e-mail. It wasn't immediately clear if Danielson would start Wednesday.

Fellow American and Garmin sprint specialist Tyler Farrar went down in the first crash and was delayed in the second, but he was not badly injured, Pongrace said.

Wednesday's fourth stage takes riders on another bumpy ride along several hills, a 134-mile leg from Abbeville to Rouen in the heart of Normandy.

LONDON (AP) ? Barclays Chief Executive Bob Diamond has quit his job, the latest scalp in a financial markets scandal that has also seen the bank's chairman announce his intention to resign and sown the seeds for another investigation into Britain's banking sector.

The bank said Tuesday that Chairman Marcus Agius would lead the search for a successor to Diamond, who has resigned with immediate effect. Agius still intends to stand down once a new chairman has been chosen, a spokesperson at Barclays said.

Barclays' management has come under fire since the bank was fined $453 million last week by U.S. and British regulators for submitting false reports on interbank borrowing rates between 2005 and 2009. Much of that activity originated from traders in Barclays Capital, the investment banking division which Diamond headed at the time.

Britain's Serious Fraud Office said Monday that it would decide within a month whether to pursue criminal charges in the case. The government, which has come under pressure to initiate a judge-led inquiry into the sector, has announced a parliamentary committee to investigate what went on and report by the end of the year.

"The external pressure placed on Barclays has reached a level that risks damaging the franchise ? I cannot let that happen," Diamond said. "I am deeply disappointed that the impression created by the events announced last week about what Barclays and its people stand for could not be further from the truth."

Barclays' share price was up 2.2 percent at 172 pence in midmorning London trading.

As well as facing intense media pressure over the past few days, Diamond has seen growing calls for his resignation from the political world. Both Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and opposition Labour Party leader Ed Miliband called for Diamond, a 60-year-old American, to stand down.

George Osborne, Britain's Treasury chief, said Diamond had decided to go Monday night. Osborne said he was told by Agius that "the board had come to view that that was the right decision and Mr. Diamond had come to that view."

"I think it is the right decision for Barclays, I think it is the right decision for the country," Osborne said.

The bank said Agius, 65, would become full-time chairman and would chair the executive committee until a new CEO is appointed.

"Clearly there's a lot more to come from this story right across the sector, but that's a significant scalp to be taken at this stage and now leaves a looming succession issue for the bank," said Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor.

Some analysts had thought Diamond's position was secure because there was no obvious successor in the wings.

Diamond said he still intended to face the House of Commons Treasury Committee on Wednesday to give the bank's explanation for the false interest rate reports.

Barclays is one of a number of banks which regularly submit estimates of what it will cost them to borrow from other banks. These estimates feed into a calculation of the London interbank offered rate (LIBOR) which is used to determine payments from a range of financial contracts.

The London rate, and the related European interbank offered rate, are the benchmarks for over $500 trillion in global contracts, including loans and mortgages.

Barclays admitted that it had submitted lower than actual figures on its interbank borrowing during the credit crisis in 2007 and 2008. Several other global banks are being investigated in other countries for similar actions.

Last week, Diamond announced that he and three other senior executives were waiving any bonuses for 2012 because of the rate scandal.

The financial terms of his departure were not immediately disclosed.

His departure came as a surprise.

On Monday, Diamond sounded like a man determined to keep his job. In a memo to staff, he said he was disappointed by the misbehavior which led to the massive fines, but said: "It is my responsibility to make sure that it cannot happen again."

Diamond built up Barclays Capital into a profit-spinning powerhouse, and scored an important coup during the financial crisis by buying the remains of Lehman Brothers U.S. operations in a $1.35 billion deal.

Barclays survived the credit crisis without resorting to the kind of taxpayer bailout which saved Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland, relying instead on an injection of capital from Qatar Holding, the government-backed investment fund.

In January last year, Diamond memorably told a House of Commons committee: "There was a period of remorse and apology for banks. I think that period is over."

2012 is looking like the year of Mark Duplass, both in terms of quantity and quality. As writer and director with his brother, he started off the year delivering yet another one of his notoriously lightweight and only mildly entertaining dramadies, 'Jeff Who Lives At Home' before deciding to step out into the actors' circle, with two leading roles and two supporting roles all in the same summer. Its odd to see someone come out of nowhere in such a short span of time, and I'll admit I was skeptical of his acting potential after seeing him in the trailer for 'Your Sister's Sister.' But if the movies he stars in are as charming and enjoyable as 'Safety Not Guaranteed,' then I guess I really shouldn't complain. But it's kind of true: Duplass isn't the best actor. He acts and sounds a lot like he's imitating Jason Segel, which might explain why he cast Segel in March's 'Jeff Who Lives At Home.' As the core of which everything this film revolves around, a not-so-major actor like Duplass was a risk, and while I wouldn't say he gives a particularly noteworthy performance, he at least holds his own. Aubrey Plaza, on the other hand, gives a performance so good that she may have put to rest her typecasting as the 'attitude girl' for good. At the beginning of the film, she remains as sarcastic and jaded as she is in her past roles, but by the end, you'll believe that she can be a star, and that her emotional range is far better than you may have guessed. It's also perhaps worth noting that she looks better than ever before as well, with her big, emotion-filled eyes working perfectly to her advantage.Since all I knew about 'Safety Not Guaranteed' was that it has to do with time travel, I was definitely surprised in all the best ways. The direction itself isn't anything special, though truly beautiful shots appear here and there. What's more remarkable about the technical craft of the movie is its soundtrack, a great collection of music that is consistent in its tone throughout. But the real draw is the fantastic story it tells. There are a couple of subplots revolving around each of the characters, and while each are simple, they all tie in to the greater theme of nostalgia and regret that the main narrative tackles physically rather than emotionally. Its beautiful how well everything comes together in the end, and while a few plot elements feel half-baked, generally the story is exactly how it should be: simple on the outside with layers of depth peering through. Props also must be given for the most awesome self-aware line I've heard in a movie in a long, long time.Yet the script's greatest accomplishment is how it plays with the audience. Needless to say, don't read too much about the plot if you think you might see it. Expectations are a big part of what makes the ending of the film so profound and awesome; its one of those rare movies where you don't realize how brilliant it is until the finale, after spending the entire time trying to figure out what the story was actually about in the first place.

Weaver, Angels shut down Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jered Weaver carried a shutout into the eighth inning, squirming out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night.

Weaver (9-1) allowed five singles, struck out two and remained unbeaten in Cleveland. He's 5-0 with 1.52 ERA in eight career starts at Progressive Field. Scott Downs worked out of a mess in the eighth and pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

The Indians loaded the bases in the seventh off Weaver, who got a force at the plate, foul pop and strikeout to end Cleveland's best threat.

Howard Kendrick homered in the seventh off Ubaldo Jimenez (7-7) as the Angels improved to 16-3 on the road since May 22.

Weaver, who pitched a no-hitter against Minnesota on May 7, allowed two hits through six innings before the All-Star went a little wild in the seventh.

He walked Jason Kipnis leading off and allowed Michael Brantley's single, giving Cleveland its first baserunner at second. Weaver walked Carlos Santana to load the bases and Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher went to the mound to settle down the right-hander.

Turns out, Weaver was never in real danger.

He got Johnny Damon to ground to third baseman Alberto Callaspo, who alertly fired home to force Kipnis. Weaver then retired Casey Kotchman on a pop behind the plate before fanning Shelley Duncan on a nasty slider that was low and way outside.

After the strikeout, Weaver calmly walked to the dugout as if he retired the side in order.

Weaver was pulled after giving up two singles to start the eighth. Downs came in and induced All-Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to hit into a double play and popped up Kipnis. Downs then worked a perfect ninth as manager Mike Scioscia chose to stick with the left-hander instead of closer Ernesto Frieri.

Weaver had little difficulty handling a Cleveland lineup that had just scored 32 runs during a four-game series at Baltimore.

Making his third start since coming off the disabled list with a strained lower back, Weaver retired 11 in a row before giving up a leadoff walk in the sixth. He quickly recovered, however, by getting Jack Hannahan to ground into a double play.

Angels rookie center fielder Mike Trout, the AL's leading hitter, was scratched from the starting lineup with a jammed right pinky. Trout hurt his finger diving back into second on Sunday in Toronto. The All-Star reserve had trouble gripping the bat during early batting practice and Scioscia rested the 20-year-old before bringing him in as a pinch-runner in the eighth.

Kendrick's homer in the seventh gave Weaver a two-run cushion - more than enough for the three-time All-Star.

With one out, Kendrick drove a 3-2 pitch from Jimenez over the wall in left for his fifth homer.

The Angels added a run in the eighth when Jimenez walked three - two intentional - and forced in a run. Jimenez gave up three runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings.

Los Angeles had its own trouble with Jimenez before finally pushing across a run in the fifth on Erick Aybar's sacrifice fly.

NOTES: X-rays on Trout's finger were negative. He has sparked the Angels' turnaround. They were 6-14 when he was called up from the minors on April 28, and are 39-21 since. Trout was named the AL's top rookie for June, when he set franchise rookie records for average (.372), hits (42), runs (27) and steals (14). ... When Hollywood power couples break up, it seems everyone has an opinion. But when Katie Holmes announced she is divorcing from couch-jumping, "I-love-this-woman!" Scientology member Tom Cruise, none other than Rupert Murdoch, News Corp.'s chief executive, opted to give his two cents.?

"Scientology back in news. Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in hierarchy," the octogenarian tweeted Sunday morning.

Princess Diana biographer Andrew Morton wrote an unauthorized biography of Cruise in 2008, alleging the "Mission:Impossible" actor had become the de?facto second in command of the Church of Scientology. The controversial book attacked the star by comparing his daughter with Holmes, Suri, to the Devil's child in the cult film "Rosemary's Baby."

He continued: "Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."

When one of Murdoch's followers asked the mogul's thoughts on Mormons, he?responded,?"Mormonism a mystery to me, but Mormons certainly not evil."

Countless people, both pro- and against Murdoch and his views, reacted to his comments. But the octogenarian is standing by his words.

"Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks," Murdoch wrote. "Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story."?

APNewsBreak: Evidence of 'God particle' found

GENEVA (AP) ? Scientists believe the "God particle" that might explain the underpinnings of the universe is real, and they are about to present their evidence to the world.

Physicists at the world's biggest atom smasher plan to announce Wednesday that they have nearly confirmed the primary plank of a theory that could shape the scientific understanding of all matter.

The idea is much like gravity and Isaac Newton's discovery: It was there all the time before Newton explained it. But now scientists know what it is and can put that knowledge to further use.

The focus of the excitement is the Higgs boson, a subatomic particle that, if confirmed, could help explain why matter has mass, which combines with gravity to give an object weight.

Researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, say that they have compiled vast amounts of data that show the footprint and shadow of the particle ? all but proving it exists, even though it has never actually been glimpsed.

But two independent teams of physicists are cautious after decades of work and billions of dollars spent. They don't plan to use the word "discovery." They say they will come as close as possible to a "eureka" announcement without uttering a pronouncement as if from the scientific mountaintop.

"I agree that any reasonable outside observer would say, 'It looks like a discovery,'" said British theoretical physicist John Ellis, a professor at King's College London who has worked at CERN since the 1970s. "We've discovered something which is consistent with being a Higgs."

CERN's atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate dark matter, antimatter and the creation of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang.

The phrase "God particle," coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman, is used by laymen, not physicists, more as an explanation for how the subatomic universe works than how it all started.

Rob Roser, who leads the search for the Higgs boson at the Fermilab in Chicago, said: "Particle physicists have a very high standard for what it takes to be a discovery," and he thinks it is a hair's breadth away. Roser compared the results that scientists will announce Wednesday to finding the fossilized imprint of a dinosaur: "You see the footprints and the shadow of the object, but you don't actually see it."

Fermilab, whose competing atom smasher reported its final results Monday after shutting down last year, said its data doesn't settle the question of the Higgs boson, but it came tantalizingly close.

"It's a real cliffhanger," said Gregorio Bernardi, a physicist at the University of Paris who helped lead one of the main experiments at Fermilab. He cited "strong indications of the production and decay of Higgs bosons" in some of their observations.

Fermilab theorist Joseph Lykken said the Higgs boson "gets at the center, for some physicists, of why the universe is here in the first place."

Though an impenetrable concept to many, the Higgs boson has until now been just that ? a concept intended to explain a riddle: How were subatomic particles, such as electrons, protons and neutrons, themselves formed? What gives them their mass?

The answer came in a theory first proposed by Scottish physicist Peter Higgs and others in the 1960s. It envisioned an energy field where particles interact with a key particle, the Higgs boson.

The idea is that other particles attract Higgs bosons and the more they attract, the bigger their mass will be. Some liken the effect to a ubiquitous Higgs snowfield that affects other particles traveling through it depending on whether they are wearing, metaphorically speaking, skis, snowshoes or just shoes.

Officially, CERN is presenting its evidence this week at a physics conference in Australia but plans to accompany the announcement with meetings in Geneva. The two teams, ATLAS and CMS, then plan to publicly unveil more data on the Higgs boson at physics meetings in October and December. Each of the teams involves thousands of people working independently to ensure accuracy.

The scientific threshold for discovery is high. Scientists have to show with complex formulas that there's a less than 1 in 1.7 million chance that the findings are a statistical fluke. With two independent experiments showing that there's less than 1 in 16,000 chance of being wrong, it's a matter of how their work is put together.

Scientists with access to the new CERN data say it shows with a high degree of certainty that the Higgs boson may already have been glimpsed, and that by unofficially combining the separate results from ATLAS and CMS it can be argued that a discovery is near. Ellis says at least one physicist-blogger has done just that in a credible way.

CERN spokesman James Gillies said Monday that he would be "very cautious" about unofficial combinations of ATLAS and CMS data.

"Combining the data from two experiments is a complex task, which is why it takes time, and why no combination will be presented on Wednesday." he said.

But if the calculations are indeed correct, said John Guinon, a longtime physics professor at the University of California at Davis and author of the book "The Higgs Hunter's Guide," then it is fair to say that "in some sense we have reached the mountaintop."

Sean M. Carroll, a California Institute of Technology physicist flying to Geneva for Wednesday's announcement, said that if both ATLAS and CMS have independently reached these high thresholds on the Higgs boson, then "only the most curmudgeonly will not believe that they have found it."

Through the years that I have covered news in Washington, D.C., I have always tried to follow one rule - don't try to predict what the Supreme Court is going to do on a certain case. That was driven home this week by decisions in several major cases of the Court's 2011-2012 term.

On Monday, Chief Justice John Roberts - who has been villified by Democrats in recent years - joined with more liberal Justices to strike down three different provisions of an Arizona immigration law that was championed by many Republicans.

On the same day, Roberts also dealt Democrats a rebuke on a campaign finance case by overturning a Montana state law that had restricted corporate contributions to political candidates, upholding the controversial Citizens United ruling of 2010 that drew a Presidential rebuke in a State of the Union Address.

Then on Thursday, the Chief Justice - nominated by President George W. Bush - joined with the four more liberal members of the Court to deliver a major political victory to the President by voting to uphold the Obama health law.

If you put $5 on that Judicial Pick Three at the beginning of the week, the payoff would have been pretty good, because those may not have been what many people might have predicted for the Chief.

"Obviously, for conservatives and many supporters of federalism, this will be viewed as the Brutus moment with regard to Roberts," wrote legal expert Jonathan Turley.

It was a turn of events that had been discussed several months ago - Roberts siding with the liberals to save the Obama health law - but it hadn't been given much attention in recent weeks.

For Roberts to deliver such an important victory to the Obama Administration was even more supremely ironic, given that Senators Obama and Biden had both voted against the Chief Justice's nomination in 2005.

"My job is to call balls and strikes and not to pitch or bat," Roberts said in his Senate confirmation hearings, a line that was repeatedly spit back in his face by Democrats, who routinely accused the Chief Justice of embracing ultra-conservative positions.

The turn of events on Thursday left GOP lawmakers scratching their heads.

"He's a brilliant constitutional lawyer," said Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who passed on the opportunity to criticize the Chief Justice in an interview.

"I think the Supreme Court got it wrong," said Rep. John Sullivan of Oklahoma.

"I was surprised the Supreme Court appears to let all of the law stand," said Rep. Frank Lucas of Oklahoma.

"It doesn't change the fact that it's a bad law," said Rep. Dan Webster of Florida.

"I certainly was surprised with where the swing vote came down, with the Chief Justice," said Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia, "but I respect him as a man and respect the Court."

Republicans vowed to overturn the law, arguing they will benefit politically for November by making it one of their main campaign goals.

Reporting on the Supreme Court

On Monday this week, I visited my company's main flagship radio station in Atlanta and was on the air live with Neal Boortz trying to flesh out the Arizona immigration ruling.

The initial news reports indicated a "split" decision, but as I wrote in a blog that night, it seemed to me that the real story was a defeat for the states and a victory for the Federal Government by stating that the feds were in charge of immigration policy and enforcement.

As I was rushing out of the station on Monday afternoon, I stopped to talk to a few of my colleagues and told them of how nervous I get reporting on Supreme Court rulings, because they can often be very complicated to dissect - especially when you are trying to get the news out quickly.

I thought of that on Thursday morning as I was faced with competing assessments of the Obama health law - CNN and Fox News were reporting that the individual mandate has been struck down; other outlets were giving a different story.

I was live on the air and made the decision to play for time, to talk about how there were different stories, instead of deciding that one was correct.

It was a good decision.

In the end, CNN and Fox were both wrong, and they had to backtrack.

Some colleagues of mine who work at one of the other major TV networks gathered on Thursday night in Washington, D.C. for drinks after work - marking how they didn't get that news wrong on the air.

There should have been an easy way to figure out which way the ruling was going, since the majority was formed by Chief Justice Roberts and the four more liberal Justices.

This is what was at the end of the opening "Syllabus," which summarizes the decision of the Supreme Court:

"ROBERTS, C. J., announced the judgment of the Court and delivered the opinion of the Court with respect to Parts I, II, and III?C, in which GINSBURG, BREYER, SOTOMAYOR, and KAGAN, JJ., joined; an opinion with respect to Part IV, in which BREYER and KAGAN, JJ., joined; and an opinion with respect to Parts III?A, III?B, and III?D. It's almost the definition of confusing.

And when you are racing against the clock - and against your competition - sometimes mistakes can be made.
