Leyte Sports Academy to recruit new athletes | Leyte Samar Daily ...

TACLOBAN CITY ? As sports festival and athletic meets heat up in various areas of the province, the Leyte Sports Academy, headed by former Board Member Rowil Batan, is likewise on the prowl for new athletes to recruit for province-sponsored sports training.

Batan, together with Leyte Governor Jericho Petilla, attended the opening ceremonies of the Area Meet for Leyte?s fourth district held at the Kananga Elementary School in Kananga town, where he urged athletes and coaches to join whenever the Leyte Sports Academy tryouts and screening are in town.

?Athletes representing the schools in the towns of Kananga, Albuera, Merida, Matag-ob, Isabel and Palompon joined in this district sports meet.

?Batan likewise encouraged the school sports advisers to train their students well so they can qualify for the free slots at the academy.

?The sports academy is prioritizing recruits who are out of school youths and cannot afford to get themselves to schools. As a requirement, the potential sports scholar must be between eight to fourteen years old and stands 5?6? in height.

?The pool of athletes recruited under the program is housed at the Leyte Sports Development Center, more popularly known as the Grandstand, where they would attend sports trainings under professional trainers and coaches and at the same time complete their school studies supervised by the Department of Education

?Athletes recruited are on a sports scholarship and get free training in various sports disciplines such as track and field, swimming, boxing and taekwondo with free board and lodging and free education.

?First batch of sports-athletes numbered to 37 as the Leyte Sports Academy started operation and athlete-training in September 2010. It was able to haul in the majority of medals during the 2011 Eastern Visayas Regional Athletics Association (EVRAA) Meet held in Calbayog City and sent most of its athletes to the Palarong Pambansa.
