Text before horrible car crash warned of texting while driving

Chance Bothe knows firsthand the dangers of texting and driving.

The Texas man typed this message to a friend while driving home from college earlier this year, "I need to quit texting because I could die in a car accident and then how would you feel ..."

A few seconds later, Bothe's pickup veered off a bridge and plunged 35 feet down into a ravine.

KHOU-TV reports he suffered traumatic brain injuries, a broken neck, a punctured lung, compound fractures on his legs, torso fractures, a fractured skull and a fractured face, which would later require extensive reconstruction. He had to learn to walk again. And injuries to his brain have had an effect on his personality, the station reports.

"I'm very lucky that I'm not gone forever," Bothe, 21, told KHOU-TV on his last day of a six-month rehabilitation in Houston. "I still have things to do in this world."

One of the first things he's doing is spreading the word of the dangers of texting and driving.

"They just need to understand, don't do it. Don't do it. It's not worth losing your life," he said. "I went to my grandmother's funeral not long ago. And I kept thinking, it kept jumping into my head: 'I'm surprised that's not me in that casket.' I came very close to that. To being gone forever."

Texting while driving is banned in 39 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. Texas does not have a statewide ban on texting while driving. However texting while driving is banned in some municipalities and school zones in the state.

Bothe still may still face additional surgeries and rehabilitation, but he promises to spread the message about the dangers of texting and driving for the rest of his life.

"What people have told me is the reason God didn't keep you away from this Earth is because you have something special to do," he told KHOU. And I believe what is special is that I should tell everyone not to text message and drive."

Greenland Meltdown Driven by Collapse of Glaciers at Ocean Outlets [Slide Show]

News | Energy & Sustainability

The interactions between the island's glaciers and the surrounding seas may be driving ice loss, according to aerial photographs

greenland-glacier-lossNOT-SO-GLACIAL RETREAT: New findings show how Greenland's meltdown has proceeded in fits and starts, the latest burst coming between 2005 and 2010. Image: Anders A. Bjork, Natural History Museum of Denmark

Future sea levels depend on how much and how quickly the massive ice sheet covering Greenland melts. Satellite-based measurements have revealed that Greenland's glaciers are melting and on the move?and the ice sheet as a whole has lost some 36 billion metric tons of ice each year in recent years. Thanks to weird weather, nearly the entire ice-covered surface of the world's largest island melted for a period this year.

View a slide show of Greenland's meltdown.

Now aerial photographs reveal that this loss of ice is driven more by the accelerated breakdown of ice sheets where they reach the sea (and a subsequent speed up in outflowing ice) than the difference between snowfall and such surface melt. Danish scientists identified two periods of ice loss?1985 to 1993 and 2005 to 2010?that have been responsible for the bulk of Greenland's meltdown. The research appears in Science on August 3.

In fact, outlet glaciers have receded by more than 100 meters across the northwestern edge of the ice sheet. For example, the Sverdrup Glacier retreated by 1,000 meters between 2005 and 2010, also losing 80 meters in height. Roughly 80 percent of the ice loss seems to be attributable to this kind of loss at glacier outlets rather than the glacier as a whole. The cause may be warmer ocean temperatures, although sea-surface temperature measurements are lacking to definitely prove that hypothesis.

Aerial maps that extend the record back as far as the 1930s may help further refine scientists' understanding of this meltdown in the north?and its implications for how much the seas will rise in coming decades.

RIM tips August 9th BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE Canadian release

Image

The wait for a quicker PlayBook is nearly over -- for our neighbors to the north, at least. RIM let it be known via the official BlackBerry blog that the followup to its business-minded slate will be hitting "select" Canadian retailers on August 9th. Not convinced that you need the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE in your life? RIM's got four, count 'em four, reasons to pick up the verbose slate -- speed, size, web browsing and movies and TV -- which can be found in moderate detail at the source link below. The tablet features 32GB of storage and OS 2.0.1 pre-loaded -- the aforementioned software is also currently available as a maintenance update for owners of the old fashioned WiFi model. The slightly souped-up PlayBook is hitting Canada first, but will be coming to additional areas including the US, Europe, South Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America in "coming months."

[Thanks, Ruben]

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: This ...

Not sure why I am putting this out here.? Maybe for healing as I try to accept the forgiveness I know God has so freely given.? Maybe for comfort in just sharing my story with the heartache I have put so many through.? Or maybe as warning to some and hope to others.? I know that my only hope is in God.? I must trust his promise that all things work together for good to those who love him.

?

I was the one who repeatedly cheated on my wife.? I was the one who was judgemental of her for many years.? I was the one who was controlling for many years.? I was arrogant and proud.? Not knowing about the affairs she finally had enough and said "I love you, but I am not in love with you anymore".? And she did not know about the affairs when she said this.? God hardened her heart toward me to bring me to a crossroad of life.? Do I confess, repent and walk in obedience to Him, or do I continue to live my own life in defiance to God.? Thankfully he caused my confession and repentence.? Eventually God's word and I am convinced the Holy Spirit moved me (hard lesson to defy the Holy Spirit-wow) to bring full confession to the affairs, first to church leadership, then my wife, then my children.? My wife has been gracious, and with godly counsel is working on forgiveness of me because that is what Christ commands.? This will be very difficult for her, impossible without God's intervention.? I will say that without God's miraculous intervention I probably would still be living in sin.? My wife wants to work on the marriage if only for our children's sake.?? Which isn't a bad thing considering what I have done to her over the years.? At least there might be some time to show true repentence and humility.

?

The adage always says "if I had to do it all over again....".? But that is not possible so it doesn't help to look back with "what if" scenarios.? I do beleive it is appropriate to remember for avoidance in the future, and to know that reliance on God going forward is the only way to have hope.

?

From an eternal perspective, God's hardening of my wife's heart was the best thing that ever happened to me.? I do have to deal with the consequences of my sin including anguish, embarassment, hurting my wife and kids.? Confession and repentence do not promise us that we will avoid consequences (see King David).? But confession and repentence do promise us God's forgiveness, God's grace, and being able to trust in his promises throughout scripture.

?

My wife is reeling and taking some time away from me.? Church leadership and close friends have shown support and grace, only becasue of godly repentence.? My wife's close friends, while very angry, will eventually show grace and forgive as they are godly women.? My wife has much to absorb, and only with God's grace and love will she be able to forgive, and hopefully move toward reconciliation at some point.

?

Satan is trying to destroy this marriage and family.? Have no doubt that he started a long-time ago with my pride and arrogance.? Now, with God's help and biblical counseling I am trying to walk in humility, serving my family as best possible.? I must be patient in God's timing, prayerful and wait on the power of the Holy Spirit to move.? I must also continue to grow closer to God in my daily walk so that if/when she is ready, that I will be ready to reconcile and love her the way Christ loves the Church.

?

I haven't read too many of these situations on various websites to where the offending spouse committed adultery yet confessed and has since exhibit many months of the "fruit of repentence".? Yet the offended spouse was already hardened before that revelation, maybe more so now.? The offending spouse wants reconciliation, but the offended spouse would not want this except for the impact to the kids for sure, and maybe some basic but limited (right now) desire to follow God's word on forgiveness and reconciliation.? So the prodigal/offending spouse is standing, which is challenging since in all human perspectives, the offending spouse has no right to stand.? I hear som many stories to where the godly spouse stood for the prodigal to come home.? But under God's grace, as the prodigal who returned do I have a right to stand for my marriage?? Stand on God's promises despite my sin and causation of this situation?

?

Is there any encouragement you can give me?? Similar stories?? Is there an direction and biblical advice you can give me?

Rabies resistance arises in backwater thick with vampire bats

Residents of two Peruvian communities appear to have survived infection

Web edition : Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

Some people living in a vampire bat?ridden part of the Peruvian Amazon seem to have developed natural resistance to the rabies virus.

?Why these individuals don?t die is very intriguing,? says CDC disease ecologist Amy Gilbert, who led a study by researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Peruvian Ministry of Health.

The detection of anti-rabies antibodies in the blood of 14 percent of healthy individuals tested in two communities suggests that people had been exposed to the virus and survived, the researchers write in the August American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. All of those positive for antibodies reported encounters with vampire bats resulting in a bite, scratch or skin contact. Only one person sampled reported having been vaccinated against rabies.

Without immediate treatment, the rabies virus makes its way to the victim?s brain, leading to fever, paralysis, convulsions and death. Every year the virus kills more than 55,000 people worldwide.

Many factors may determine how quickly or whether rabies exposure leads to a full-blown infection, Gilbert says. The relatively gentle bite of a vampire bat may deliver a much lower dose of the virus than, say, a dog or raccoon bite. The proximity of the bite to the victim?s head can also play a role. Perhaps even the genetics of the victim is important.

?Rabies used to be a disease we said was 100 percent fatal. It was the most deadly disease of all diseases,? says infectious disease doctor Carol Glaser, with the California Department of Public Health. But that?s not always the case: Three people in the United States recently survived what appeared to be serious rabies infections. No other disease, not even Ebola, kills everyone it infects, Glaser notes, ?So it would make sense that there?s a bit more of a spectrum than we appreciated.?

Gilbert and her CDC colleagues studied two remote communities in the Peruvian Amazon. Neither settlement has formal roads; one of them, Truenococha, is a two-hour boat ride to the nearest health clinic and the other, Santa Marta, a six-hour ride. Several nearby communities have had rabies outbreaks in recent years, so the researchers, along with the Peruvian Ministry of Health, went to investigate the link between vampire bats and exposure to the virus.

The discovery that several people appear to have survived exposure to rabies does not mean that anyone should stop worrying about the virus. ?We certainly don?t think these people are protected,? Gilbert says. They still need to get post-exposure treatment following bites.? In fact, in areas where people have fairly regular interactions with vampire bats, routine immunizations, especially of children, are a good idea, she says.

Brazilian Breaks Medal in Shower After Judo Win

A Brazilian judo competitor broke his Olympic bronze medal after taking it into the shower and dropping it after his victory in a third-place match in London.

Felipe Kitadai, who beat Italy's Elio Verde to win bronze Saturday, was so excited about the result that he did not want to be parted from his prize.

Big mistake.

Felipe Kitadai

"He was taking a shower with the medal when he dropped it," a spokeswoman said. "He then slept with the medal and realized later that it was broken."

"It wasn't a very smart thing to do."

The medal was damaged at the top where the ribbon loops through a hoop, but after a few phone calls and apologies, Olympic officials agreed to replace it.

Hopefully the 23-year-old will be more careful with this one. Same with all medal winners, including America's own adorable Missy Franklin.

Leaked renders purport to show Sony Xperia SL's fresh coat of paint

Xperia SL

Sony's IFA 2012 line-up has been subject to some major leakage over the past couple of weeks. We've already seen leaked photos and spec sheets for the international Xperia GX (LT29i Hayabusa), the Xperia J and the Xperia Tablet, and now it's the turn of the "Xperia SL."

As previously rumored, the SL seems to be an Xperia S with a fresh coat of paint and a shiny new CPU. In addition to the black and white exteriors used by the Xperia S, the SL brings silver and pink to the table. And the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 powering the S is clocked up to 1.7GHz in the SL. Essentially, it's a spec bump similar to the move from the Xperia Arc to Xperia Arc S in late 2011. There's also a fairly important software change, too -- the SL runs Andorid 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

The images above (and the couple more after the break) have appeared over on Chinese site ePrice, along with specs for the rumored device. They're unconfirmed at this point, but ePrice has proved fairly accurate at sniffing out unreleased Sony phones in the past.

Anyone tempted by this re-vamped Xperia S? Let us know in the comments.

Cancer debate: Are tumors fueled by stem cells?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Scientists have found new evidence for a theory about why some cancers return after they've seemingly been wiped out. Three studies in mice say tumors contain a pool of cancer stem cells that can multiply and seed the tumor's regrowth.

If that's true, scientists will need to find a way to kill those stem cells, in addition to how they attack the rest of the tumor.

Researchers have been finding signs of this stem cell idea for about a decade. The new studies by three teams of scientists take a different approach in analyzing tumors of the brain, skin and colon in mice. The work was published online Wednesday by the journals Nature and Science.

UK Quad Poster for Woody Allen?s To Rome With Love

Woody Allen?s To Rome With Love, his return to the big screen following his Oscar-winning Midnight in Paris, was released in the US last month and has been doing very well over the past few weeks.

We first thought that the film might be coming straight to DVD here in the UK, since a release date was still unannounced as late as a month ago. But Sony will now officially be releasing the film on our shores in two months? time, and have released the UK quad poster (essentially a landscape version of the American one-sheet).

?To Rome with Love is a story about a number of people inItaly, some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors, and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into.?

Allen is directing from his own script, and has assembled a fantastic cast to star alongside him, including Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Pen?lope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, and Ellen Page.

To Rome With Love is set to be released here in the UK on 14th September, so if you?re a fan of Allen?s work, and have been looking forward to seeing this on the big screen as well, be sure to make a mental note now. And in case you missed it or would like a refresher, you can catch the latest trailer here. It looks pretty wonderful. As usual with this new poster, you can click to enlarge.

Scams, bedbugs among top consumer headaches?

By Bob Sullivan

Bedbugs, penny auctions, gold buying-companies and solicitations for home improvement work disguised as ?free? energy audits are among the newest complaints that local and state consumer protection agencies dealt with during the past 12 months, according to a survey released Tuesday.

The fastest-growing complaints in the survey by advocacy groups the Consumer Federation of America and the North American Consumer Protection Investigators involved debt collection abuses, Do Not Call list violations, mortgage-related problems and home improvement scams.

The report?s top 10 complaints include familiar issues, such as auto sales and repair and credit/debt issues. But a set of real estate related complaints cracked the top 10 for the first time?covering issues with timeshare sales and resales, retirement and assisted living facilities and real estate fraud. The full top 10 list is below.?

Tenant bedbug problems and home repair firms using high energy bills to dupe consumers were among the fastest-growing complaint categories, giving consumer agencies around the country a new set of?issues to deal with.?

The agencies' report was generated by a survey of 38 state, county and city consumer protection agencies from 22 states from March 2011 through May 2012.

?State and local agencies are essential components of the consumer protection system in the United States,? said Susan Grant, director of consumer protection at CFA. ?Their services save consumers and businesses money, relieve the burden on courts, foster confidence in government, keep the public safe, and help ensure fairness in the marketplace.??

Click here to read the full report (.pdf)

The report also includes numerous cautionary tales.

In Georgia, the Governor?s Office of Consumer Protection told surveyors that more than 100 consumers complained that a penny auction company named Wavee charged their credit cards $179 for "bid credits" without their permission after they signed up. After an investigation, Wavee refunded more than $1 million to 16,000 consumers.? In another penny auction case, iTicketBid.com refunded $22,000 to Georgia consumers when it allegedly failed to deliver sporting events tickets and other merchandise.

In Virginia, the Fairfax County Department of Cable and Consumer Services said it fielded numerous consumer complaints that a debt collection agency was taking money from their bank accounts without their knowledge or consent.

"In one case, a consumer said that she had paid her dentist directly for the $40 she owed him, but in the meantime the collection agency that the dentist hired took the account information from her check and created a ?remotely authorized? check in her name to electronically debit $30 for late fees from her bank account," the report said.?

In Florida, the state's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said bogus "free energy audit" solicitation phone calls were among the fastest-growing Do Not Call violation complaints.? Callers often falsely claimed that because the audit was free, the call was not subject to the restrictions of the Do Not Call law.?

The Pinellas County (Fla.) Department of Justice and Consumer Services reported that consumers also received postcards or flyers promising free audits to help lower their utility bills.

"In one case, the consumer was told that his electric bill would be reduced by at least $130 a month and that he was eligible for a $360 rebate from the federal government if he agreed to have a special ?energy efficient radiant barrier? that was used by NASA installed in his home," the agency said. "He was pressured into opening a $5,800 line of credit for the work. The company started the job but never completed it."

The fastest-growing set of complaints to the California Department of Consumer Affairs involved bogus locksmiths and other firms that practice without proper licensing.? Locksmiths use the Internet to advertise low prices to consumers in crises, including being locked out of their homes. But after disassembling locks, they often sharply raise their quoted prices.? The department said it forced several such security companies to close, and made hundreds of others obtain proper licenses.

A new type of identity theft combining computer hacking and old-fashioned telephone tricks showed up among complaints reported to the New York State Department of State Division of Consumer Protection. A woman received an unsolicited call from a man who said he was a computer security professional and that her computer was infected with a virus.? He then tricked the woman into divulging her password and promised to fix her issue.

"The next day, however, she noticed an unauthorized charge on her credit card and realized that she had allowed an identity thief to gain access to the personal information stored on her computer," the agency reported. ?

Also in New York, the demise of Hollywood Video turned into a headache for many consumers. After the video rental store shut down and filed for bankruptcy, the New York consumer agency received many complaints from consumers who said that Universal Fidelity Corp. -- which is managing the bankruptcy -- was demanding payment for unreturned videos, even though they had returned the videos and owed nothing. The agency says it is resolving complaints through mediation.

?

Top 10 Complaints (with last year?s rank in parenthesis)

1. Auto (1): Misrepresentations in advertising or sales of new and used cars, lemons, faulty repairs, leasing and towing disputes.

Study finds that most mobile gaming is done at home - Gaming Nexus

Pop Cap recently commissioned a study by?Information Solutions Group to see how often people play mobile games in their day to day lives.

The study, which included some 125 million gamers worldwide, found that mobile gaming is not necessarily played on the go but largely while at home. This seems quite contradictory, as the term mobile gaming infers playing games while on the go, but that seems to not be the case. This especially true with tablet gamers, as they play more games at home than any other group.?

The gaming landscape may be changing, but does that mean that console and PC gaming will go extinct? I don't find that very likely, but time will tell how the gaming demographics will change.

Mobile Games Survey: Half of U.S. and U.K. Mobile Gamers Choose Mobile Devices as Primary Home Gaming Platform

PopCap Commissioned Survey Sees Mobile Games Played Everywhere; Most Popular Places to Play are on the Couch and in Bed

SEATTLE, WA ? July 24, 2012 ? Half of U.S. and U.K. mobile gamers favor mobile devices as their primary home game platform, according to a new survey released today by PopCap Games, a division of EA and maker of some of the world?s most popular video games.? Part of an extensive research project that projects a 125 million mobile gamer population in the U.S. and U.K, the survey reveals that mobile gaming doesn?t necessarily mean ?gaming on the go,? with many mobile gamers stating that their favorite place to play mobile games is at home on the couch or while laying in bed.? The survey also uncovered many surprising, quirky and naughty mobile gamer habits.

Conducted by independent research firm Information Solutions Group, the survey analyzed the behavior and play habits of mobile gamers, defined as those who have played a mobile game in the past month.

?We already know that people play mobile games ?on the go,? but now we are seeing mobile gamers largely favor their mobile devices for home use.? said Dennis Ryan, VP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap. ?If you add the fact we are seeing a deluge of new gamers coming in through mobile, we believe mobile gaming is invading the last bastion of video game consoles and personal computers: the home.?

The full results of the survey can be found here:? http://www.infosolutionsgroup.com/2012_PopCap_Where_People_Play_Mobile_Games.pdf

Following are highlights from the findings:

Mobile is the new primary home gaming platform, especially for tablet owners

50% of the mobile gamers in the survey agreed that mobile gaming is their favored method of game play at home over traditional consoles, computers and handheld gaming devices. Tablet-only players preferred home play on mobile devices even more (57%).

Mobile gaming doesn?t have to mean ?on the go?

According to the new survey, the top five places to play mobile games are: at home on the couch (69% of U.S. and U.K. gamers surveyed), at home laying in bed (57%), as a passenger in a car or on a bus or train (63%), waiting for an appointment (55%) and while watching television (41%). Those who play mobile games exclusively on tablets confirmed that they play more at home on the couch (78% percent) and while watching TV (52%) than other mobile gamers. Those who stated that they play mobile games only on a smartphone were more likely to play in situations that required waiting, such as while at a restaurant, in line at a store, or at an appointment.

Naughty gamers are playing mobile games everywhere; surprising facts

Many reported playing mobile games in offbeat places: A combined total of 10% confessed to playing mobile games either in a church or other place of worship, or while driving a car and/or while watching a movie at a theater. Of those surveyed, 8% confirmed they had played mobile games while in class at school and 9% had played at a sporting event. 6% of those surveyed had played mobile games at work during a meeting or a conference call, and 4% had played while at the gym. Almost one out of 10 mobile gamers (9%) reported that they had been late or missed an appointment, class, ride or flight because they were caught up playing a mobile game.

These distracted or naughty gamers and those who play in unorthodox places tend to be male (60%), younger than 35 years old (69%) and play frequently (78% play daily). This group also spends more money on mobile games (75% of this group spent money on games in the past year vs. 51% of the overall mobile gamer population) and are more likely to play mobile games with friends (85% play weekly, vs. 52% among overall mobile players). They plan to spend an average of $49.63 in 2012 on mobile games, game currency or content vs. $29.04 overall.

Survey Methodology

This international research was conducted by Information Solutions Group (ISG; www.infosolutionsgroup.com) exclusively for PopCap Games. The results are based on 2,301 online surveys completed by members of the world?s largest online ePanel (Toluna) in the United States and United Kingdom between April 25 and May 1, 2012.? To qualify for the survey, individuals had to own and use a mobile phone. Among these mobile phone owners, 1,004 were identified as mobile gamers (those who played a game on their mobile phone in the past month). In addition, 712 of the mobile device owners were also identified as smartphone owners, while 361 were identified as tablet owners. In theory, in 19 cases out of 20, the results will differ by no more than 2.3 percentage points from what would have been obtained by seeking out and polling all U.S. and U.K. mobile phone owners age 18 and over. Smaller subgroups reflect larger margins of sampling error. Other sources of error, such as variations in the order of questions or the wording within the questionnaire, may also contribute to different results.

Congress pushes to finish Iran sanctions bill

(AP) ? House and Senate negotiators are wrapping up a bill to impose a new round of sanctions on Iran, targeting shipping lines and adding other punitive measures to derail Tehran's suspected push for nuclear weapons.

Lawmakers hoped to unveil a final bill late Monday, with a House vote as early as Wednesday.

The measure would reconcile a bill the House passed last December and one the Senate backed in May. But several lawmakers are concerned that the legislation doesn't go far enough. They are pushing for a bill that labels Iran's energy sector a "zone of proliferation concern" which would effectively ban all business.

A draft version of the bill says it's the sense of Congress that Iran's energy sector be treated as a "zone of proliferation concern."

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he visits on Sunday - and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.

Romney is visiting Israel as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.

The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments - and because he's not Obama.

"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."

In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Still, with polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.

Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials. Romney attended swimming events in London on Saturday morning ahead of his planned flight to Tel Aviv.

In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.

He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. The Romney campaign said the likely GOP nominee only had time in his schedule to meet with one Palestinian leader and that Fayyad has an existing relationship with Romney. The Abbas camp did not offer an explanation for why no meeting was planned.

Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.

Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.

"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."

Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."

"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."

Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.

Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.

Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.

Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.

Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."

Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

Surgeons banned from human research

Two University of California at Davis surgeons have been banned from doing human research after they injected bacteria into the head wounds of consenting terminally ill patients without university authorization, according to a letter sent from the school to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The university ordered Drs. J. Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph J. Schrot to immediately "cease and desist" doing the procedure last fall, according to the letter, dated Oct. 17, 2011, obtained by the Sacramento Bee.

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi has ordered a review into the actions of Muizelaar, who is chairman of the department of neurological surgery at U.C. Davis, and Schrot, an assistant professor.

The lack of approval before conducting human research could jeopardize the school's federal funding, said Rosamond Rhodes, director of bioethics education at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

"You are required to comply with federal rules if you are an institution accepting federal funding for research," she said. "Whether or not the project is funded by the federal government, it still has to comply with the rules."

A spokesperson for the FDA told ABCNews.com it "cannot confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation."

The surgeons said they were given consent by three terminal patients with glioblastomas, tumors that arise from the supportive tissue of the brain, to insert bacteria into their head wounds. The doctors believed the bacteria would create a postoperative infection that could help the patients live longer, according to documents included in the letter to the FDA.

The surgeons insisted they were conducting an innovative treatment, not research.

"There are people who blatantly break the rules that endanger all of their research programs. We certainly didn't blatantly trample any rules," Muizelaar told the Sacramento Bee.

Two of the patients contracted sepsis and died as a result of the procedure, according to the university.

Harris A. Lewin, vice chancellor for research, wrote that the experimental procedure, which had been conducted on three patients without university or FDA permission, "constituted serious and continuing noncompliance reportable to the FDA."

Muizelaar was ordered to hand off his clinical investigations, while Schrot was required to take the FDA's Clinical Investigator Training Course "to assure he possesses requisite knowledge to perform future studies, if and as permitted," the letter stated.

On Thursday, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine awarded the university $53 million for research into Huntington's disease, limb ischemia and osteoporosis.

Man stops alleged iPhone thief, makes a video

By Marc Santia, WNBC

David Gray / REUTERS

Brian Hester was taking a smoke break on Barclay Street when he witnessed a man steal an iPhone straight out of a woman's hands Thursday.

Hester, a real estate broker and avid photographer, wasn't going to just stand by and do nothing, so he gave chase.

"All I was thinking was, 'Catch this guy,'" Hester said Friday.

Joined by other New Yorkers, Hester and the band of strangers caught up to the alleged thief on Broadway. They held him on the ground and Hester began taking video with his camera.

As they waited for police, the alleged thief decided to make a run for it, but Hester wasn't about to let him get away. He chased the man a second time and tackled the alleged crook right in the middle of Broadway.

Police came and arrested the man and the band of good Samaritans returned the iPhone to its owner.

Throughout the ordeal Hester continued to shoot video with his camera. He hopes that the video he took will serve as a warning to potential thiefs.

"I wanted to put the video out there to show anybody else who's thinking of coming to New York and snatching somebody's iPhone that you're not going to get away with that," said Hester.
