PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -? Today, State General Treasurer Gina Raimondo launched an initiative to improve Rhode Islander's financial literacy.
"Empower RI" aims to help residents balance home budgets, plan for retirement and reach financial goals.
Raimondo tells Eyewitness News, the whole state will benefit if families are more financially stable.
She says some financial struggles might have been avoided if families better understood personal finance
"Too many people today get into student loans or mortgages that they're really not aware of the risks and it's time to help Rhode Islanders make the right choices and get on a stable path," said Raimondo.
According to Raimondo's office, two-thirds of Rhode Islanders report having difficulty covering expenses and paying bills.
Only 31-percent have emergency funds and over 30 percent have no reitrement plans.
