The Atlanta chapter of the International Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Needlework, the Peach State Stitchers, recently presented Northside Hospital?s Infusion Center with 90 blankets for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

As a regional leader in cancer care, Northside treats more than 3,500 patients with cancer each year.? Many of these patients require chemotherapy as part of their care.? Warm, cozy blankets help to ease some of the side effects that patients often experience during treatment and cheer them up.? This is the second year that the Peach State Stitchers have supported Northside?s cancer patients with blankets.? According to staff, patients are very appreciative of them, often returning for future appointments with their blankets in hand.

?The generosity of receiving a blanket that was so thoughtfully made, as well as the brightly colored fabrics, really helps to improve our patients? outlooks,? said Phyllis Youngblood, director of oncology quality and support services at Northside.? ?We truly appreciate the Peach State Stitchers for being so generous and thinking of our patients.?

Established in 1998, the Peach State Stitchers is a group of women and men, who share a common interest in Jewish tradition and desire to create Judaic needlework and fiber projects for family, home, synagogue and other community organizations.? In keeping with this goal, the group?s Tzedakah (meaning giving or charity) Committee was formed.? Through fundraising and in-kind donations of fleece material, the committee makes the blankets in the hope of making a difference in the lives of patients receiving chemotherapy treatments.? Each blanket includes a special tag, sewn into the fabric ? ?Sending Warm Thoughts Your Way, Peach State Stitchers.?

Plans are already underway to provide additional blankets to the Infusion Center throughout the coming year.? In previous years, the group also has supported Northside?s Special Care Nursery with blankets and isolette covers.

"Something as simple as a warm and cozy fleece blanket can have such a huge impact in easing both physical and emotional side effects patients often experience during treatments,? said Arlette Berlin, program co-chair, Peach State Stitchers.? ?This project reaches patients on a personal level, and I feel very fortunate to be a part of it.? Whether we get together as a large group or a member makes one alone at home, we are reminded of the fragile nature of life."
