Angry Good?Fun

Rage has all the ele?ments of a suc?cess?ful shooter ? it plays very well, it presents a chal?lenge, and it?s prob?a?bly the most fun you?ll have this side of new?year.

What prob?a?bly makes it so much fun are the var?ied game modes that make up the game as a whole. Of course, there are the typ?i?cal run and gun moments where you have to storm a ruined and struc?turally unsound build?ing, killing any?thing and every?thing that gets in your way. But spliced neatly between the onslaught of mutants and raiders comes two other ways to play, which kind of act as minigames in a?sense.

The first is a kind of FPS take on Mario Kart, in which you drive around a track hit?ting boxes that give you weapons, fir?ing rock?ets at other rac?ers, and com?pletely oblit?er?at?ing their vehi?cle of choice. How?ever, unlike Mario Kart, there?s blood, grit and bad lan?guage. How this will tie into the sto?ry?line of the game is not yet appar?ent, but even if it does just act as a relent from the oth?er?wise con?stant gun?play, it?ll be a wel?come addi?tion to the?game.

The third game mode that we were able to try out will prob?a?bly be famil?iar to you if you?ve played the Rage iOS app, which was free for the first week of release, and is still avail?able on the App Store. In it, you are hired by a mad?man who runs a sick kind of real?ity TV show. You are put into a rat-trap with your gun, and all man?ner of mutant beasts (?muties?, as they are lov?ingly referred to in the game) jump out from the walls to pro?vide a fun chal?lenge in how much blood you can shed before get?ting your head ripped off. The mode is made up of sev?eral lev?els, some harder than oth?ers, with a big bad boss man at the end. We rec?om?mend rationing your grenades?

The weapons of Rage are just as unique as the game?play itself. There are of course the stan?dard assault rifles, shot?guns and pis?tols, but they all act per?fectly when it comes to destroy?ing things. One par?tic?u?larly mind-blowing weapon is the wing?stick. You may have seen it in game?play trail?ers, but there?s noth?ing quite like the feel of lob?bing a bladed boomerang and lop?ping a man?s head clean off. Even the Bethesda rep stand?ing over my shoul?der couldn?t stop him?self from exclaim?ing how cool it?is.

Although it has had some bad press, with peo?ple com?par?ing it to either Fall?out or Bor?der?lands or both, the game doesn?t rely too much on what has made the rest of the post-apocalypse mar?ket suc?cess?ful. It doesn?t take itself too seri?ously, and it?s cer?tainly going to have you scream?ing with blood?thirsty glee when you take a shot?gun to a mutie?s head!
